Default Early Returns on Trades

Joe Sheehan did some early evaluations of last winter's trades.
The annoying thing about this article is that in some cases he takes this year's performance into account (eg the Sheffield deal) but in other cases he completely ignores it (eg the Alomar deal). If you're going to ignore this year's stats, why write the article? You might as well republish stuff from the hot stove league.

All I have to say is, Thank you Mets .
Appier is 3-1 with a 2.83 ERA. While Mo has been everything he was for the Halos. Or should I say, wasn't.
The Jordan,Perez/Sheffield trade actually has me interested in the Dodgers again.

I still think it's a little too early to start evaluating player's performances this year, but the Perez/Jordan for Sheffield deal may not have been as lopsided as people originally thought, if Perez continues to pitch as he has.

I think Perez is the real deal. He's only 24 and has three partial seasons under his belt. Most pitchers who are able to pitch at the big leagues at the young of an age are fairly good bets to succeed; if they stay healthy.

Whatever happened to Big Mo ?

I remember his last couple of years at Boston, yelling 'Walk him Walk him' every time he came up to bat against the Jays.

He was a monster, and while Iknow he didnt deserve the MVP, he was always one of those opposition players that just gave you fits.

He started hanging out at the Bada-bing with Silvio, Paulie and Tony, and starting eating at Vesuvio's every night....now he looks like Bobby Bacala!

Default Perez

The Sopranos post cracked me up Smed!

Odalis Perez came back from Tommy John surgery with an improved fastball and a year of sitting around with Maddux and Glavine. Luckily, he listened and has credited them with really helping his knowledge while he couldn't pitch. Since TJ's tend not to recur (I said tend!) and he's had no other injury history, he does look like a good pitcher. I got him in the 22d round of my fantasy draft and he's my best pitcher by far. (I'm no genius ... I figured at worst, he's in a good pitchers park!)

It is far to early to be evaluating trades unless heavily caveated. They've barely played 40 games.

Well, I'm an American and I'll fill the cosmos with e-word pollution as much as I care to. In fact, I evaluated most of those trades the instant they were made! I will state now, definitively, that the A's won the Pena trade, forever and ever, permanently and unambiguously. How's that grab ya?

Baseball is so unpredictable, I'd never declare a winner in a trade until several years down the road. You never know what is going to happen. It appears that the A's got the better end of the deal so far.

When the Padres made a lot of dumps, one of them was to dump Sheffield for Trevor Hoffman (among others)...and the media jumped all over them for that.

Trades also beget trades that beget trades. It takes a long time for everything to settle.

Yeah, that's me. I had the Blue Jays avatar for a week in honor of J.P. and Keith Law, but there are too many of them here already. And the D-Backs avatar does have pretty colors. Besides, who else has caused the effing Yankees to lose a World Series lately?

And just to toss in this thread's actual topic: the Diamondbacks totally, clearly, obviously lost the Mike Myers for Jack Cust and Lyle Overbay trade.

No, but Sheehan did proclaim the Mets the winner in the Estes-Shinjo-Relaford-Bell deal, despite Estes' predictably inconsistent performance, 4.71 ERA and $6+ million contract. Shinjo stinks, but at least he's only getting 1.3 and the Giants can always bench him. And Bell's got the second-best OPS on the Giants, a quite respectable .797, for 1.75.
