Talking Ball Four, Side Retired

Another one of those plays that make you say "You don't see that every day!"

Today's Yanks-M's game.

2 outs. Runner on 1st. 3 balls on the batter.
Runner takes off for 2nd. Pitch to the batter is ball four. Runner slides head first into 2nd, not realizing it's ball four and he's entitled to 2nd.

Catcher, not sure himself on ball four, throws to the SS covering 2nd.

On the head first slide, the runner touches 2nd, and then slides over the bag, breaking contact with the bag.

The SS, stays with the tag and, touches the runner on the LF side of second base, while the runner has no contact with the bag.
After some appeal by the SS, the ump calls the runner out. 3rd out of the inning, side retired.

The logic from the TV booth is - runner was entitled to 2nd on the walk to the batter; but, once he passed the bag, it's the same as a pick-off play and he can be tagged out.

I don't ever remember seeing that play. Anyone else ever see one like it?

Only in Little League.

Of course, our Little League coach made us run to first on a walk, and then every once in a while we'd keep running to second. If time wasn't called it was legal.

Classic play and it worked every time.

Jeter is getting alot of credit that I don't think he deserves.
I think it was just a boneheaded running play

Have to admit, I missed it live as I was trying to get the dogs into the house as it was going down, but, from what I saw on replay, it looked like Jeter talked the ump into making the out call, no? If true, doesn't he deserve some credit for knowing the rules better than an ump?

It seems like a walk would automatically be a time out, but as Smed said, maybe it's just something we take for granted.

Maybe this will bring about a clarification of the rule: The Derek Jeter Rule (?!?)

People should not time is "in" unless directly stated by the ump. Why do you think that time is called expressly when the manager or pitching coach or catcher come to the mound?

Sometimes people get lazy at their jobs, take shortcuts, daydream, and get caught.

Well, give Jeter some credit. At least he didn't get into a big brouhaha over it.

Here's the link to the article:

It's actually nice to see some umps willing to change their opinions when they're wrong.

I saw the play live and was mad because I thought that Jeter talked the ump into it. I didnt realize that it was ball four and all that....I was watching about 6 games at the time.
