Every year he gets mention as a potential offensive breakout candidate... the next superstar of baseball... yet we're all still waiting. This season, he's already struck out 14 times in 37 at bats... then again, despite this being his 7th season, he's still only 25.

2000 wasn't his breakout year?

I haven't seen him this season yet but I hear he gained a bunch of weight. Is this true?

Dunno, Chris - I've watched a couple Braves games already this year, and I haven't noticed anything too beefy.
Back to gyb's question - I'm not sure whether he's really going to improve much, though. Given his defense, he can afford being only a mediocre offensive player. If his plate discipline improved, it'd be another story, but he's had quite a few years to improve it, and his current hitting coach was never one for plate discipline himself.

I completely agree, and would go further: a lot of teams could do worse than having a 30HR guy who's the best defensive outfielder in the league. I still think he has time to improve his plate discipline. Now about the way he spells his name... |

The key number is 25. Check him out when he's 27.

He's got so many years ahead of him that I wouldn't worry too much. But he does seem like he regressed slightly last year. I would love to see him in a Tiger's uniform. He'd be perfect for Comerica's center field.

Didn't say I wouldn't want him, but a .135 drop in OPS and an OBP of .312 last season says there's some work to be done. |

Those are pretty compelling numbers indicating a guy who really retrogressed last year. He is only 25 but he has 5 full major league seasons under his belt, too. I would suspect that what we have seen is what we are going to get.

he gets legitimate credit for looking like he's not trying hard while making ridiculous plays. jim edmonds, on the other hand, gets the same credit, and I don't know why. [that is, i think he makes a lot of great looking plays that andruw jones would make after standing under the ball for five minutes, reading the business section ] |
