sorry to bring up Ichiro again, but here's an interesting Huckabay article at BP which concludes that Ichiro's arm is average for a RF. (Remember, most RF have great arms to begin with)

Sorry, but, when Ben Grieve ranks ahead of Ichiro, and you're talking about the ability to gun, there's something wrong.

I know I am dense, though how can Grive rank ahead without ,according to this chart any assists/ Am I reading this correctly? Matt Lawton has a better arm then Suzuki?Hmm.. |

The chart seems to be ranked by the percentage of times a runner attempted to gain an extra base on the fielder. Its not a particularly impressive piece of work, but I agree with the basis premise which is that Ichiro's arm is strong but that there are other RF's out there - Walker, Mondesi, Vlad etc - who are as good or better. |

Just another prime example of the futility of trying to quantify defensive performance.
Wow, I just almost sounded smart. |

In trying to account for the times when a fielders rep stops players from advancing, they go too far. I don't pay much attention to outfield assists, because a lot of time they are governed by running when the situation doesn't warrant it. |

Plus I would have a bit more faith in the numbers if the list created passed the 'common sense' test.

it doesn't say grieve was better than ichiro, or even average. In fact, he's last, as he had zero assists. The important column is the last one, the rate of assists per opportunity.

It seems to me that the correlation between those stats and having a strong arm is pretty thin. I don't think Ichiro has a great arm but he has a good arm and he is the best I have ever seen at charging a ball and getting rid of it quickly.

It's not just the strength of the arm. Accuracy counts, and so does the baseball sense to throw to the right base.
