Default Strikeout, One-Three

In last night's O's-Yanks game, Towers struck-out Posada and the ball bounced off the catcher Gil, and rolled towards 3B, in foul territory.

It probably rolled about 35 feet from home plate, again, about a foot "foul" where Towers pounced on it and threw to Segui to retire Posada at 1B.

It's a strikeout, scored 1-3.

Anyone ever see something like that? It was a first for me in 29 years, I'm pretty sure.

I'm confused, SP. How is this different than any other third strike that gets away from the catcher and requires the catcher throwing down to first to record the out?

The fact that it was the pitcher who gloved the bouncing ball, not the catcher (which is the case 99.99999% of the time), and it was the pitcher who threw to 1B (not the catcher) to record the "strikeout."

I assume from your description that Posada didnt even try to beat the throw to first?

The last time that happened was probably a little league game.

He should have - but, he just sorta stood in the box while this was unfolding. Had he been quicker to react, he could have made it a tougher play.

I have never seen or heard of the old 1 - 3 strikeout. BTW, since it struck the catcher shouldn't it be the 2-1-3 strikeout????

Not sure you can grant an assist for something that you block with your body?

Don't get me started on Posada's stellar baserunning skills and quick reactions -- this one I can defend a bit because I heard this on the road when I was on my way home...Sterling was saying Posada didn't run because he thought it was a foul tip, but the sound he heard was actually the ball hitting off the umpire (the second one of the night that the catcher completely missed and the ump wasn't too thrilled about it -- the trainer came to look at him and he was fine)....like I said, I could be wrong because I didn't see it, but that's what they thought...I'm not sure why he went by sound and not feel of the bat though..

I've never seen that type of putout either...

Thanks Luna - hitting the ump/missing the catcher (which I didn't know) would be another reason why the catcher did not get an assist and it wasn't 2-1-3.

So was it a D-U-1-3?

Pitchers get assists all the time for ground balls that bounce of them that go directly to infielders.

I agree. If it touched the catcher he should get an assist. An ill-deserved assist, but an assist.

You've GOT to be kidding me. You know, it's people like you who just want to COME IN and just CHANGE THE RULES and ruin the game. It's because of that that we can't know if Barry Bonds is really as good as Babe Ruth. You've all ruined the game I love, with your skyboxes and statistics and infield fly rules and electronic scoreboards and your [mispronunciation of "Olerud"]

[/end imitation of curmudgeonly old guy]

btw, I agree, Smed.

Sorry guys - this is my fault - see Luna's post. It never hit the catcher - just the ump.
