This warrants a completely separate thread....

Aside from Morgan being extremely over-repetitive and inane, his analysis is just plain WRONG way more often than it should be. I haven't played an inning of professional baseball, and even *I* know when his explanations are off. Every once in a long while, Morgan reveals something that makes me go, "oh, yeah." But mostly I find myself immediately contradicting his insipid insight.

But, apparently, a lot of people just love the guy's announcing and analysis. I don't get it. Or Harold Reynolds. Or Rob Dibble. Or Peter Gammons. And, unfortunately, less and less, Jon Miller -- used to like the guy in B-more.

As a joke - - I think? - - I received a copy of "Baseball For Dummies" a couple of years back. Sure, I looked at it - - not overly impressed - - wished it had been better, perhaps I would have recommended it?

Who wrote it? Joe Morgan.

Thumbs down

Morgan and his cohorts have made me madly in love with my mute button. Letters are worn off it and the remote isn't that old.

You've given me a good idea for another thread - thanks.

Back to Morgan - in Baseball for Dummies, he thanks former teammates/friends: Bench, Caminiti, Gibson, Griffey Sr., Larkin, McCovey - - and Bill Lee who were "part of my learning experience about the greatest game in the world."

Maybe Lee slipped something in Little Joe's cornflakes?

There's about nothing worse than a guy who runs off at the mouth about something he knows very little about. Unfortunately, in about every sport, there's one of these guys behind the mic.

There are very few TV announcers that I've heard in the last few years that were even tolerable.

The only time I listen to Joe Morgan is when I absolutely have to, playoff time, ESPN Sunday night.

I think he is extremely overated as an announcer. He too makes me want to turn the sound down (that is not an easy thing, only two others have done that, Tony Kubek and Dick Vital) I don't even mind listening to Dennis Miller.

Anyway with Morgan I always feel he is jealous. Jealous of players today, jealous of the fame and money they receive, and most of all when people were calling the Yankees of 1998 the greatest of all time, he was certainly jealous them.

All I kept hearing was how his team had all these hall of famers, and how the Yankees were just a good team.

With Walter Matheau dead, and that bait guy chuck, perhaps Joe Morgan could play a role in the next Grump Old Men!

Default Morgan and others

If Joe Morgan does the telecasts for the College World Series this year, listen how many times he compares what the college players are doing with how he used to do things. Granted, Joe Morgan was a great player. But, his schtick gets old. Besides not being able to wax nostalgic on the ESPN telecasts (which he admitted last night by saying he didn't know much trivia during the Red Sox-Yankees game I believe it was), he too often "pounds his chest" and makes people think he was the greatest player ever. Same goes for guys like Tim McCarver - who is even worse than Morgan! I mute the TV when McCarver does a game. The last player I remember who did a good job in the booth was Steve Stone. Excellent with Haray Caray! Tips for ex-players in the broadcast booth from a fan who watches and listens to games: 1) Don't get too overanalytical and 2) Don't compare others to yourself. We already know what you did in the majors. Let us be the judge to whether or not a certain player "measures up" to the standards you set - or didn't set.

If guys like Morgan and McCarver are so disliked, why are the networks employing them?

Good question!!

I think it's an indication of much MLB and Network TV (whose in bed together anyway) is out of touch with the fans of their game

Because the people at the networks who make these decisions don't know baseball - and therefore these guys sound smart to them.

Explain Steve Lyons. I can't.

Lightbulb How about Kruk?

My dad's favorite broadcaster growing up (but not his teacher's) was Dizzy Dean. "He slud into third" and "Stan Moozeel looks mighty hitterish up there" are some of the things Dean reportedly said on the air. And, his belching on air and singing "The Wabash Cannonball" were some other memorable Dean attributes. I wish I had got the chance to hear him.

I remember John Kruk doing some analysis for Fox a while back. Why don't they bring him back? Put him on some games? He wasn't too bad, was he? At least, he didn't give us the "I was soo good back in my day" stuff like McCarver.

Here's another suggestion: how about bringing that homosexual/ex-ballplayer into the booth? I forget his name but he recently was in the news - seems like it was Billy Bean. He seems like a very articulate guy. Probably wouldn't get very many locker room interviews, though.

They did - he is. Just read that he left his coaching job with the Phils farm team to go back to TV.

Isn't this the same Billy Beane who is the GM of the A's?

The GM has the "e" at the end. The former Padre does not. Two different people.
