Default New Catcher for the Tigers?

25 year old Mike Rivera is making a strong push to be the Tiger's starting catcher. He had a .935 SLG + OBP last year at AA Erie.

I've been watching him -- would have liked to seen some AAA results. Plus, power hitter heading to the wrong park. Still, he'll probably be the best solution for the Tigers - the other guy can't catch and the other other guy can't hit.

With the Tigers' D shaky as it is, how much could Meluskey hurt? Then again, maybe that's a reason to carry Inge, and hope that he hits a little.

Nowadays, I'd play the guy who can't catch, because he'll cost you less runs than the guy who can't hit.

I wish they could combine Robert Fick, Mike Rivera and Brandon Inge into one Uber-Catcher.

That was tried in Boston. Scott Hatteburg clearly could not catch. Sure all the pass balls were Wakefield. Get a grip on reality Scotty. He was painful to watch. That is one position you can not substitute a big stick for. Catchers have to be able to catch. End of story.

Inge just got sent down. Looks like Rivera has the job to start the season.

I think the long term plan is to have Rivera and Inge split the job. Hopefully Rivera is LaDocua part II.

Stolen bases don't matter in this day and age. I don't know how many runs difference there are between a good defensive catcher and a poor one, plus you won't normally need the catcher as a pinch hitter so it's easy to use them as a defensive sub.

Not talking about abilty to throw out the runner. I was talking about abilty to catch the damn ball from a pitcher or infielder. I was not talking about the noodle for the arm, I was talking about abilty to catch. For tha A's sake I hope he can recieve all the throws he will get at first base.

He is just plain horrid. As a former catch......he drove me nuts. A 2 pack of Rolaids........nuts

Still, it's a matter of personal taste. For me, unless Inge learns to hit, he shouldn't start.

The Sox had Varitek, so they could spot Hatteberg.

I know it's early but Rivera has been one of the lone semi-bright spots. He has batted pretty well and his defense doesn't look bad.
