Default greatest opening day memories

What would you call the best opening day moments in baseball. This could either be a personal event or an event in general.

I would rate Fellers No hitter as the greatest opening day feat. I would think that that would have to get the team off to a great psycological start.

OD day is my day - - - from 1976 to about 1985, I went to every Yankee opener (twice in 1981!) - - - - then took a break until recently - - was there last year and will be there on Friday.

It's like the fountain of youth for me. Lots of memories - hard to pick just one.

Good thread! Hmmmm, tomorrow will be my 4th opening day. I always say this is the best. Maybe it is the one you are at that is the best. I think Everret hit 2 homers (one from each side of the plate) 2 years ago and Manny hit a monster bomb to win the game last year. I think the last home/season opener that I went to was 4/1.

Guess Net is right, they are all special.I have not slept in 3 nights! I am worse than a kid the night before Christmas!

I would have to agree with Bob Feller's no-hitter being the best opening day.

I have only attended one opening day... the opening of Comerica Park. It was 30 degrees with a 30 mile per hour wind. Comerica was empty by the time the game finished.

I would rate Feller's no-hitter at the top, but I was there for George Bell's three homer game against Saberhagen in 198X. That was pretty special, too.

Default Opening Day

Feller's no no is a great moment. So was Bell's 3 HR day. Of course there is Tuffy Rhodes!!! But for me my greatest opening day memory came in 1977 at Old Comisky Park. Bill Veck owned the White Sox then and we all know Bill was quite the showman. To put things in perspective I was 6 years old at the time. Veck gave everyone a styrophone (sp?) baseball and the full house threw out the first pitch. It was crazy. 45,000 plus baseballs flying every direction. They we light like a wiffle ball so you could not get them very far. We were sitting in the third row and balls were raining on us from behind. I must have thrown 30 balls on the field that day.

As for the game it was nothing exciting. I think the Sox lost to the expansion Blue Jays, but I am not sure. But I'll always remeber throwing out the first pitch. Thank you Bill Veck!!!

Talking opening day

Tom Seavers return ...I was then living in the Bronx {deep within enemy territory}I took me awhile to get there[#1 train from the end of the line to times square,#7 afterwards} pulling upin the train outside a ballpark is a jolt, you know?Shea was sold out, and Met fans had had nothing to cheer about in a long time. Great Pr by the then new ownersto bring Seaver back,Annie had procured me tickets, magically, again{man, we werent even married then],and I saw some life return to that field again for the first time in many years.Saw Tom strike out Rose to start the game,he pitched 6 innings if I remeber,it was a lovely early spring day, and we were married a few months later...it was FUn, exactly what it was supposed to be...

Been to a couple Pirates openers. Went to the Pirates-Mets season opener in Shea, must have been 1991. Pirates won, Bobby Bo hit a long homer, people threw popcorn on us from the upper deck...

Well, we were dancing after the homer.

And the Jersey girl vendor: Hwaaaaaaatt daaaaaawgs!

Boot - they beat the BoSox 5-2 as Ken Brett beat Rick Wise.

But you probably ate too much then fell asleep on the way home as you crashed after your sugar high. Did they have to stop the game because of all the styro balls?

I hope you had to look that up. If not you are sicker than I am!!! They actually planned it well enough to have the promotion done for game time; but as I am sure you suspected there were balls flying onto the field continously through out the game. It was no Disco Demolition but it was a little messy. Not as bad a a Randy Myers poster game at Wrigley I was at. Randy blew a 3 run lead in the 9th and there was a half hour delay to clean up the posters on the field!!!!
