The Royals are fast coming to a point where they have to make a decision about Jose Rosado. Jose has missed virtually the last two seasons with arm injuries and has had surgery twice.
This winter the Royals either had to release him or offer him a contract of at least 80% of his prior year. The brass (GM Allard Baird and others) went to see how Rosado was rehabbing this winter and reported back to the less than cynical KC fans that Rosado looked "great" and was really firing the ball. There next move was to off Rosie a nice contract of $3.5M that had a pay cut but not the full 20%. Hey they didn't ask me. Now spring training has arrived and things aren't so good. His first outing his fastball was in the 70's. His second outing his fast ball was at 82. I know Rosie has never been a flame thrower but not many non-knuckleballers survive with that low of velocity. The rub is the Royals must either cut him 15 days before Opening Day and pay him 20% of his contract or they can cut him later and pay the whole contract. It is so rare, but no unheard of, for a pitcher to miss two seasons and then bounce back to be a quality pitcher that I say cut your losses and move on. Also, he is coming up on his eligibility for free agency. Rosado is a modern day player, and will ask for what the market will bear and ignore the Royals hanging with him for three years of arm trouble.

I saw it on Espn this morning that they have released him. Has anyone seen how he looked (live) this spring?

Here's the article:
HAINES CITY, Fla. -- Left-hander Jose Rosado, a two-time All-Star who has struggled with shoulder problems in the past two years, was placed on unconditional release waivers Sunday by the Kansas City Royals. In two starts during spring training Rosado was 2-0, but had a 6.75 ERA. He allowed seven hits, including a home run, and walked two in four innings. Rosado, 27, has not pitched in the majors since April 30, 2000, and has had two shoulder operations since. He was the winning pitcher in the 1997 All-Star game and also pitched in the 1999 All-Star game. Rosado was a 12th-round pick of the Royals in 1994 and made his major-league debut on June 12, 1996, at age of 21. By releasing Rosado more than 15 days before Opening Day, the Royals are responsible for $532,787 in termination pay rather than his entire $3.25 million salary.

The word is that Rosado took the news rather hard. Athletes leave in a funny world. He is upset that he got cut, but not at all upset about drawing $7-8M while on the DL.
Royals GM Allard Baird hinted they would like to sign him to a minor league contract if he clears waivers.

Being left-handed really helps his chances of being picked up somewhere. Particularly if they can do it a low dollars.
I think the Royals were right to unload him, but that's the scary part. There evaluation and development of pitching talent is non-existent.
