What do you guys think about Esteban German making the A's Major league squad when spring training is over?
and is so would he move to lead off and put terence long back to the #5 hole or maybe at #3?

He had a good year in AA-AAA last year. But, he had less than 200 PA is AAA. That's a big jump for most - to the majors. Not that it can't happen - - but, it's rare for someone to star making that leap.

Probably, the A's will see how he does this Spring, and, if he doesn't appear ready to handle the bigs FT, they can always give Randy Velarde and Frankie M another year at 2B and let the kid develop.

I think the A's signed Velarde to back up Menechino, and provide some insurance for the kid. Don't expect to see him until midseason.

Of course, he could tear up spring training and force the issue.

Default A's at 2B

German is a bit raw for the A's right now and Velarde is good insurance against Menechino's late season fade being permanent. German could steal the job with a big spring, but more likely is a trip to Sacramento for some more OBP training.

When German is up, he'll be an ideal leadoff man assuming his OBP holds. He has sick speed and pretty good base stealing success.

The A's may be shy about rushing German after installing Jose Ortiz as the everyday 2b last year and having him essentially play his way out of the organization. With Menechino and Velarde, they can afford to go slow until he wins the job on the field.
