We all know that Roberto Alomar is one of thr greatest fielding 2B of all time.
But, how many know were he ranks with the bat? Well, the only 2B with a career Offensive Winning Percentage better than Alomar (min 890 PA) are: Lajoie, Collins, and Morgan. That's it - three. Therefore, AT THE LEAST, Alomar should be ranked as the number 4 2B of all-time on your ballot. Thanks.

There are some who would argue his Gold Glove rep is more from making flashy plays than actually being a great defender. But, either way, he's certainly above average.

2nd Basemen with higher career OPS than Charlie Gehringer:
Rogers Hornsby That's it. Gehringer is actually 76th on the career OPS list at 884. The 1937 AL MVP also ranks among the top 100 all-time in these categories: Batting Average - .320 (49th all-time) On-Base Percentage - .404 (47th all-time) OPS - 884 (76th all-time) Games - 2,323 (81st all-time) Runs - 1,774 (17th all-time) Hits - 2,839 (40th all-time) Total Bases - 4,257 (47th all-time) Doubles - 574 (16th all-time) Triples - 146 (58th all-time) RBI - 1,427 (49th all-time) Base on Balls - 1,186 (48th all-time) Extra Base Hits - 904 (41st all-time) He was the only player elected to the 1st six consecutive All-Star games, and finished in the top 10 for the MVP voting 8 times. He was an above-average defender, and easily the best all-around 2nd baseman of his era.

Bill Mazeroski? No. But better than Hornsby? Yes (although Todd Walker is probably better than Hornsby with the glove
).From the HOF website: "An agile second baseman with quick hands, he led the league in both assists and fielding percentage seven times each." From Baseball-Library.com: "One of baseball's most surehanded second basemen...He covered second base in a smooth, seemingly effortless style. He had quick hands and rarely lost a ball he got his glove on. Gehringer led all AL second basemen in fielding percentage nine times, led or tied for the lead in assists seven times, and had the most putouts three times. Baseball authority H.G. Salsinger wrote: "He lacks showmanship, but he has polish that no other second baseman, with the exception of the great Napoleon Lajoie, ever had. He has so well-schooled himself in the technique of his position that he makes the most difficult plays look easy." From Thebaseballpage.com: "An outstanding fielder, he possessed quick hands and proved graceful and virtually flawless with the glove. He paced AL second basemen in fielding percentage seven times, led or tied for the lead in assists seven times, and prevailed in putouts three years." Lastly, from NetShrine.com: "Among the best all-around (fielding, hitting, baserunning) 2Bs in AL history." And, interestingly enough, he's a cousin of John Smoltz.

I'm in trouble - - I have a new role at work, and, already, I'm 100 MPH - - which means I should not try and squeeze in a post here and there too.
I thought you were touting Rogers Hornsby with the glove. That's why I said "not." ![]() Gehringer? He was VERY good. One of my all-time fav players. Incredible all-around skills. Should be 1-2-or-3 all-time at 2B.

All you had to do was quote his NetShrine entry
that was enough to make me realize I did something wrong! ![]()

Ranked #3 all-time. Not among 2nd baseman, but all-time, behind only Ruth and Mays.
.338 career hitter, 3 batting titles, four 200 hit seasons, four 100 RBI seasons. .426 average in '01 was the second highest in the century. Triple crown winner in '01 Plus he had tremendous glove. Led Al in DP and PO five teams each, fielding % 7 times, and chances per game (is there a better measure of range?) 6 times. Lifetime ranks 6th in 2b, 12 in hits.
