Just have fun. - Benny "The Jet" Rodriguez, in The Sandlot I've been going to games since August 8, 1973....and on August 22, 2004, finally, a foul ball came my way. I had to reach for it, and it deflected off the tip of my right index finger. Shoot, if I was only 4 inches taller! Have you read The Baseball Same Game? |

As a player, definitely not. He only really played 1 year. Admittedly, he was fantastic in that year, but the fact that he played for the best team in the league and the teams weren't exactly very even helped him a lot.
His contributions to the game, however, are immeasurable. There are few people out there who contributed more to making baseball what it is today than Al Spalding. His book, America's National Game, was the first chronicle of early baseball. While it was flawed and quite biased, it's still important. And then, of course, there's the whole sporting good stuff. Despite all this, I vote no. I have, for the duration of this project, voted 95% based on how a player performed on the field. To me, that's what this should be about. |

Emphatic "Yes". I don't hold much with non-players getting honors, but I do recognize the work of the real pioneers who helped build the game. It is no mistake that the VC in their firstelection in 1939 selected Al Spalding.

No.
Just played 1 year in the majors. He was a good capitalist. But, if everyone wasn't playing with his balls, they would be playing with someone else's balls.
