I had to reach for it, and it deflected off the tip of my right index finger. Shoot, if I was only 4 inches taller! Have you read The Baseball Same Game? |

Mickey Vernon had a 20 year career and lost two years (age 26-27) to WWII. His career sabre stats are pretty good (RCAA - 212, WARP3 - 116, and OPS+ - 117). He hit for the cycle once, led the league in hitting twice, led the league in doubles 3 times, was on 7 all-star teams, and three times was in the Top 10 in the AL MVP voting. He was the first manager of the expansion Washington Senators. For some reason I don't wan to vote for this guy, but for the sake of consistency I am going to have to.

Inconsistent career
Had 2 years with 50+ RCAA, but until he turned 36, no other years above 20. Overall, his total of 214 RCAA is good enough to get my vote.

Borderline.
I'm giving him a yes (a borderline for me is typically always a no) because of the war. |

Real tough call. His park-adjusted stats a little better than his raw stats, but still, they're not all that great. Lifetime park-adjusted OPS only 16% above normal. I'd cut him some slack because he played into his 40s, but his 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th best seasons all came at age 35 or later. 16% above normal is the same as Donn Clendenon--granted, over a shorter career, but not good enough for me.
