He played in the major leagues from 1985 to 2001.

I've been going to games since August 8, 1973....and on August 22, 2004, finally, a foul ball came my way. I had to reach for it, and it deflected off the tip of my right index finger. Shoot, if I was only 4 inches taller!

I waffle on this guy. To me he is one of those guys who does well if he has a good supporting cast, but does poorly if the cast is weak. He won a fluke season (career year, if you prefer) batting title. A weak thumbs up.

The data seems to suggest overwise.

One would expect such a player to have a good correlation between his RCAA and team wins. If the team does well, then he does well and vise versa.

What I got was a correlation of -.11.

So, the worse the team does, the better he does.

One of my least favorite players. Overrated jerk, had a Yankee halo. Lifetime OPS 20% above the league on a park-adjusted basis means that he couldn't carry the jock of guys like Reggie Smith or Bob Watson or Jimmy Wynn who weren't born in the right year or played in the right city. I will not mention pigment--oops, I just did--though O'Neill was "scrappy" and "hard-nosed" and "blue collar" and all those terms you hear applied only to white guys.

O'Neill would've had even better statistics had the Reds not been blockheads, carting out the corpse of Dave Parker and the likes of Tracy Jones and Eddie Milner in the outfield instead of promoting O'Neill from the minors.

I voted no.

I hope this vote is decisively one-sided. That way my vote would be meaningless. I can't seem to make up my mind on him.

Just because he had his best years in a Yankee uniform shouldn't disqualify him
I mean, if we get rid of everyone's numbers with the Yankees, we'll have to turn down Ruth, Gehrig, Mantle, Dimaggio...

crazy diamond

i got no trouble with yankees in the hall

what i meant is that IF paul oneill had stayed a red for the rest of his career with the exact same stats i disbelieve he would be up for election here and that he is ONLY here because he is a yankee not because of his ballplaying ability
