Man, this is baseball. You gotta stop thinking. Just have fun.
- Benny "The Jet" Rodriguez, in The Sandlot

I've been going to games since August 8, 1973....and on August 22, 2004, finally, a foul ball came my way. I had to reach for it, and it deflected off the tip of my right index finger. Shoot, if I was only 4 inches taller!

Have you read The Baseball Same Game?

Holy cow. A WARP3 of 93.8 in only 10 seasons? Absolutely.

Rusie was a monster in the 1890's. He, Kid Nichols, and Cy Young just dominated the pitching scene of that era. His crackling fastball was probably the main impetus to move the mound back to 60'6". He only played 9+ seasons (he appeared in 3 games on 1901) but was absolutely dominant. He hurt his arm on a pick off play and he never really got over that. He was done as an effective pitcher at age 27.

He missed the 1896 season in a contract dispute with the Giants owner. When he threatened to challenge the reserve clause the other NL owners kicked in the difference in money to avoid the lawsuit.

Despite his arm being shot the Giants were able to trade him to the Reds for a young pitcher named Christy Mathewson.

As I've said, I have hard time with the 19th century guys beyond their numbers. Rusie has the numbers.
