Default Yankees are close to signing Matsui

Third Base: The Crossroads, Part Two
by Steve Treder
In the second installment, Steve compares and contrasts all of the most prominent third-base-primary major leaguers since Jimmy Collins, including the Ken Keltner Line, as well as whoever it was who played third base for, you know, Pittsburgh in 1960.

1) The Yankees are reportedly close to re-signing LF Hideki Matsui to a 4 year contract, worth about $50 million.

Matsui's contract expired and he doesn't have enough service time to be a free agent, since time in Japan doesn't count. He has a clause in his contract that says if he's not re-signed by end of today, the Yankees must release him. Then, MLB rules state that a player placed on irrevocable waivers for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release can't be resigned by his old team before May 15. (But, players in this situation have been signed to minor league contracts and just weren't allowed in the majors until then.)

2) John Hart withdrew from consideration for the Dodgers GM job and he will remain as a senior advisor for the Rangers.

3) The Tigers signed INFs Mike Hessman and Kevin Hooper and OF Alexis Gomez to minor league contracts.

Any chance Lowell's numbers drop are part of the new drug testing in MLB?

I've been going to games since August 8, 1973....and on August 22, 2004, finally, a foul ball came my way. I had to reach for it, and it deflected off the tip of my right index finger. Shoot, if I was only 4 inches taller!

It could be. Or, it could be a bad year.

Or, he could be having a normal career path.

Now, I'm not saying that 18, 22, 26, -18 RCAA is a normal 4 year stretch. But, there is something about his career that fits a pattern I've noticed.

One of the things that I have really noticed since I started including birthdays in the ATM reports, along with the 3 best or worst years for retired players, is how often the players 3 best years gave him more RCAA than his career total, which means that he would have had enough RCAA in his 3 best years to finish with a positive figure even though he had a negative figure for the rest of his career combined.

Right now, Lowell's figures are 61 RCAA for his 3 best years, -8 for the rest.

One of these days, I'm going to have throw together some code to give me the sum of players 3 best, or worst years, compare it to his career total and see what percentage of players really do fit that profile.
