Default Umpire Quality

Does anyone think that the quality of umpires' calling is down this season?

Two of my friends watched Indians-Yankees game separately last night and they both think that the home plate umpire Rob Drake called a very bad game and made Mike Mussina hard to find the zone. And another one thought the quality of umpire is down this season and guessed maybe it's because Sandy Alderson left. Is that possible?

When watching one game you can get warped ideas of what's going on. Just go back a few years to the incredible shrinking strike zone and the take-no-prisoners style of confrontational umpiring that Richie Phillips fostered. The umpiring today is so much better than that. And remember that Mussina for all his ability is a legendary whiner.

Alderson probably hasn't been gone long enough to determine if his absence will cause a long term deviation in umpire performance. I just hope they keep using Questec to monitor umpire performance on balls and strikes.

Some say since Sandy left the Commish's office, and went to SD, no one is watching the umps these days and they have gone back to calling what they want

I've been going to games since August 8, 1973....and on August 22, 2004, finally, a foul ball came my way. I had to reach for it, and it deflected off the tip of my right index finger. Shoot, if I was only 4 inches taller!

Have you read The Baseball Same Game?

I was listening to the 9th inning of the Indians/Yankees game last night. When A-Rod was up. Wickman threw a pitch that Indians broadcaster Tom Hamilton (and evidently the Indians dugout) felt caught the corner of the plate. Hamilton's comments "Bob Davidson should just ask A-Rod for his autograph right now. He's so enamored with him." And also commented how Davidson had been calling pitches 3 inches off the plate strikes all night and suddenly decided to call one that actually caught the corner a ball. Next pitch, tie game.

Now, I didn't see it all, but you KNOW once you hear/know an umpires name, it's not for something they did right.

Mike Mussina makes it hard for Mike Mussina to find the zone. I'd say 70+% of the games I've seen this year have been Yankees games. I've also watched a fair number of NL games (Cubs, Braves, ESPN broadcasts) and I think the umpiring has been fairly decent overall this year, especially relative to the recent past. There are still some badly blown calls and some overly-confrontational individuals, but that will always happen. I'm not sure how much this affects my perception, but as a side note, this is the first year I've completely given up on anything useful being said during a broadcast, so I keep the sound off most of the time.

"Some" and their brother "They" say a lot of things, but they never offer proof.

And it's amazing how many believe them
