Default Ranking the 3000 Hitters

Over at ESPN they are conducting a poll to rank the 3,000 hit batters. The poll is interesting. Somehow Cap Anson picked up 5 hits to join this club, so that gives you 26 guys to rank. After you vote they will show your the current standings.

Top 5 after my vote, was Aaron, Cobb, Mays, Rose, Musial. Darn close to what I voted. I had Rose & Musial switched.

Something tells me that Paul Waner & Eddie Collins are doing so poorly because they are probably the least known of those 26 players.

Hmmm - I had 4 of the top 5 the same as the public as well. Sorry, but I can't put Pete Rose in the top 5 of that list at all. Bonus points for longevity, the hitter's context, and the hit record, but there is no way I would have him in the top five.

Amongst the 3,000 hit guys Pete ranks in the bottom five in RCAA.

I'd put Palmeiro just outside the top 10.

I've been going to games since August 8, 1973....and on August 22, 2004, finally, a foul ball came my way. I had to reach for it, and it deflected off the tip of my right index finger. Shoot, if I was only 4 inches taller!

Have you read The Baseball Same Game?

I put Wagner on top, Cobb second. So I figured if I was going to put Cobb up there, I was duty-bound to rank Anson last, partly because he played in the 19th century (when I think quality of play was demonstrably lower) and partly because Cobb filled my quota of racist a-holes.

I realize they didn't define "best hitters," but I don't understand how you can put Rose ahead of The Man. Eddie Collins No. 25? Gwynn ahead of...well, just about everyone he's ahead of?
