Default Polanco for Urbina

Is there anybody who doesn't think the Tigers absolutely raped the Phillies by unloading Urgueth Urbina and a 32 year-old back-up unfielder for Palcido Polanco? Dombrowski must have photos of Ed Wade in compromising pictures with goats. Male Goats.

Is unfielder a typo, or intentional comedy? This is the first I've heard of this trade, but I can't believe the Phillies would part with Polanco. With David Bell as their first-choice 3B, you can't be to sure. One thing it does, it frees up PT for Chase Utley, which should mean good things for him....and my fantasy team.

I think that judgement might be a little harsh. Urbina has been overrated for much of his career, but he is still an above average arm out of the pen, which Philly could use. Factoring in Martinez' salary, it'll cost the Phillies about $500K to upgrade their bullpen, without really losing anything, as Utley is their preferred 2B. I don't think anyone invloved is under contract for 2006.

I'm sure they would have rather dealt Bell, but then we'd be talking about the Tigers getting fleeced.

FWIW, I too thought they could get more for Polanco.
Was SD in the running?

I've been going to games since August 8, 1973....and on August 22, 2004, finally, a foul ball came my way. I had to reach for it, and it deflected off the tip of my right index finger. Shoot, if I was only 4 inches taller!

I guess you guys think more of Polanco than I do.

The Phillies traded a slightly above average guy playing a position they don't need for a slightly above average guy playing a position they do need. It helps them for this year in a wide open division, without setting them back at all in planning for 2006. I'd feel differently if they were taking on a big contract, but the money's close to a wash.

After a poor start to his career, Polanco's had 8 and 0 RCAA seasons the past couple of years and has 4 in 2005.

Urbina's been an above average pitcher in his career, with 15 and 0 RSAA seasons the past couple of years and 1 in 2005.

Not bad players. But, a couple of overrated ones get traded for each other.

The Tigers think they stole Polanco because they look at his batting average. The Phillies think they stole Ubrina because he's a "closer."

At least nobody thinks the Phillies made a steal by getting a former "20 game winner" by acquiring Ramon Martinez.

I don't like where he fits in on this team. He's a decent player, but Utley makes him expendable. And I don't think it was a secret around the league that the Phillies wished he hadn't accepted arbitration, so you wouldn't see teams offering too much for him.

I don't think it's a steal for either team. Detroit upgrades over Infante and the Phillies add a quality arm in the pen.

Eh? Are you referring to Pedro's older brother? He retired a couple of years ago, didn't he?

You're right on both points.
