If you need a refresher on the rules, you can find them here:

It's open not only to the contestants themselves, but also to any other forum members wishing to weigh in. Voting is to take place in a separate thread. We'll rotate once per week, so we'll conclude the discussion and voting for this position on Thursday, 1/10/02. Here's the Starters selected in the draft: Mexicani Blue - Dwight Gooden HMRSF - Walter Johnson b-ball-lunachik - Cy Young redsox617 - Roger Clemens ChrisCary - Lefty Grove Throwback - Pete Alexander Duque - Christy Mathewson Yogi#8Fan - Whitey Ford GoldenBear - Tom Seaver BuzzBuzzard - Kid Nichols pjl7 - Satchel Paige nyy26wc - Greg Maddux NetShrine/Xanadu Dragon - Fergie Jenkins

I'd think you want to start out by explaining why everyone else should put your pitcher as #1. And - it can be in any order. As long as you're talking about the above pitchers, it's okay.

OK, this is how Bill James ranked these pitchers:
HMRSF - Walter Johnson pjl7 - Satchel Paige ChrisCary - Lefty Grove Throwback - Pete Alexander b-ball-lunachik - Cy Young GoldenBear - Tom Seaver Duque - Christy Mathewson BuzzBuzzard - Kid Nichols redsox617 - Roger Clemens nyy26wc - Greg Maddux Yogi#8Fan - Whitey Ford NetShrine/Xanadu Dragon - Fergie Jenkins Mexicani Blue - Dwight Gooden He knows more than me, so, that's probably the way I would vote.

Based on XD's list I gotta get a bump up to at least number two based on the rule that we can only use Major League stats when voting.
As for topping the Big Train I'm banking on winning percentage and postseason performances, just an appeal for all voters to take a look in those areas when you're deciding between Walter Johnson and Lefty Grove |

I can't understand why Whitey Ford is below Clemens and Maddux, why Seaver is above Mathewson.
I agree w/ChrisCary that only MLB stats and performance should be counted, even though Satchel didn't come into the MLB until 1948 at age 41 (he was 42 in mid-season). Since we can't choose Negro League-only players, I feel that their highly illustrious Negro League performance shouldn't be used either, even if it would've benefitted them here. Postseason performance does count to me, but since Maddux hasn't exactly been the greatest postseason pitcher, I wonder why he's ranked so high, especially since Jenkins (who, BTW, never played in the WS) is ranked far lower. I think my vote will be a lot different from Bill James' so I'll see what happens when the arguments are layed out, but I think several SP's have been ranked a might too high there. |
