Default Joe Morgan on Juan Marichal

So I'm watching ESPN Sunday when Joe Morgan and Jon Miller invite Juan Marichal into the booth with them. And they had the most wonderful chat. I really enjoyed it because as a Dodger fan in the 60's I had the greatest respect for Marichal. He was a special player.

Anyway they are chatting away and it is mentioned that the Giants have erected a statue of Marichal at their stadium. They then talked awhile about how Marichal, the winningest pitcher of the 60's (second best RSAA total), never won a Cy Young. In 1965 and 1969 he should of gotten serious consideration for the award. Morgan then says that he thought having a statue of oneself in front of a stadium was more important that winning an award. He said, "I won two MVP's and I'd trade one of them for a statue".

I am not sure that true, but I'm not sure it isn't either. I know one thing for sure. That is that a plaque in Coopertown is a damn sight more important than any award.

That was a great segment. I could have sworn I heard Marichal say that not only did he never receive the Cy Young award, but that he also never received a vote.

Lots of guys have won awards that didn't deserve them.
Not many statues built for guys that didn't deserve them.
Juan has a point.

I've been going to games since August 8, 1973....and on August 22, 2004, finally, a foul ball came my way. I had to reach for it, and it deflected off the tip of my right index finger. Shoot, if I was only 4 inches taller!

Have you read The Baseball Same Game?
