Default A-Rod saves kid

Story is here Best line of the day came from Baseball Primer

"Jeter would have grabbed the kid, then dove into the stands."

Not at all. It would have been the saddest incarnation ever of "past a diving Jeter", as his attempts at rescue came up just a bit short.

My theory is Jeter was there, but ARod cut in front of him to make the play when he realized the kid was out of Jeter's range.

Kinda shows that most of the Primates are members of RSN.

I've been going to games since August 8, 1973....and on August 22, 2004, finally, a foul ball came my way. I had to reach for it, and it deflected off the tip of my right index finger. Shoot, if I was only 4 inches taller!

Sad but true Crash. I am Red-Sox and Yankees-neutral, but I am starting to develop a deep dislike for BoSox over last few seasons.

Go Jays!

I loathe both of them (or actually the media circus that surrounds them), but found this stuff humorous.

Please reserve those judgements until after reading a Yankee fan board. There are ignorant yahoos everywhere. Or better yet, ignore the Boston ones too. I don't read the Dirt Dog site, I don't listen to WEEI, and I certainly don't patrol any of the countless "fan" boards out there. The people getting the airtime are not an accurate cross section of the fans here. My enjoyment of the game went up when I tuned it all out.

But, Primer does not bill itself as a Red Sox board - whereas the other Yankee and Sox boards are clear what they are.......

Now, wait a second here. Why is someone who criticizes Jeter's fielding automatically a Red Sox fan or a Yankee hater? Let's look at the story:
1. A-Rod did an arguably heroic thing, and
2. Nobody was hurt, largely because of his actions.

This isn't like 9/11 or Challenger jokes where twisted jerks laugh at human tragedy. So I think joking about it is legitmate and not in bad taste.

So that aside, what's being done is making fun of Jeter's fielding. Fer crissakes, pretty much every stathead publication does that. The BP guys this year compared him to Piazza. That "past a diving" nickname has been around for years; hell, I've been using it for years. I think you can be completely Yankees- and Red Sox-neutral and come up with a line like that.

BTW, this joke also underscores something else all the statheads say: That A-Rod is very good with the glove.

The problem with stahead fielding is that Jeff Kent is purported to be a good fielder

This year's BP says of Kent, "He's long been better defensively than he gets credit for being." Not a putdown, but not praise.

But that's not the point. I'm saying that there are any number of reasonable people who could appreciate the Jeter line. People who say that sort of thing is evidence of an anti-Yankee bias need to get real, CRASH.

If Jeter played SS for the Milwaukee Brewers all this time, people would not even think twice about him. It's the uniform that makes people want to throw darts.

If Jeter played for the Brewers, we'd say "That's a good-hitting shortstop! Who cares about his fielding? Although maybe he's be better at second base".

That kind of dart? I don't think so. It's his uniform that makes the general public put him on a pedestal that results in the statheads throwing darts at him. Statheads don't spend a lot of time talking about how Jose Vidro's glove skills have declined because nobody cares about Jose Vidro. Jeter is a below-average fielder whom Yankee fans and others constantly trumpet as the second coming of Ozzie Smith. I say this, again, as someone who think Jeter is, as of now at least, a first-ballot Hall of Famer.

Show me one link of someone comparing him to Ozzie Smith. I know hundreds of Yankee fans and none of them claim him to be Ozzie Smith.

Don't be petulant. You know what I mean. The CW is that Jeter's a great fielder. That's what draws the howls from the statheads, like people saying Tony Womack's a great leadoff hitter, or that Nolan Ryan's the greatest pitcher of all time or that (fill in the blank) is a Proven Winner.

PS - I did try to answer your request, but when I do a search on both "Ozzie Smith" and "Derek Jeter" I get almost nothing but memorabilia sites. Ugh.
