Question Cooperstown Class of 2007

Two years ago, I was in Cooperstown and there already was a buzz about the class of Cal Ripken, Tony Gwynn, and Mark McGwire.

The shop-keepers said that it could just be the most packed HOF weekend ever.

Now, I have to wonder, with all the negative press that McGwire is getting for his lack of testimony recently before Congress, will he not be a first ballot Cooperstown member?

I think it's possible.

I've been going to games since August 8, 1973....and on August 22, 2004, finally, a foul ball came my way. I had to reach for it, and it deflected off the tip of my right index finger. Shoot, if I was only 4 inches taller!

Until he has been proven guilty of something, an objective voter could not in good conscience do anything other than vote on his accomplishments. If there were such a thing as an objective voter with a conscience, I think he'd have a decent shot, but since this is the HoF we're talking about, it doesn't look good.

Lots of bad press for Mac on this:

And, from http://chicagosports.chicagotribune....ck=1&cset=true -

In an informal survey, the San Francisco Chronicle spoke to 13 members of the Baseball Writers Association of America from around the country. Five said they would vote for McGwire, six said they would not and two were undecided.

Mac is getting buried in an avalanche of bad press. As is so often the case, the court of public opinion can be brutal. But thing can change (or get worse) in the next two years.

Open Question: If you had a vote, would you give it to him on the 1st ballot?

I would vote for Mac

Paul Molitor did cocaine, Fergie smoked marijuana, Don Sutton scuffed balls, Tris Speaker threw games - so what!

It's amazing how the press forms the "verdict" in the "court of public opinion". I really sometimes hate how one piece of news is spun one way by one group and another way by another group, and sometimes a 3rd way. It's like they think we can't make up our own minds on this, that we have to think the way they think.

Actually, this is a situation in which it's supposed to be that way.

The only thing the hall of fame is is the opinions of the writers and the old farts committees.

If the writers decide that McGwire is not a hall of famer, then by definition, you would be rightfully prohibited from thinking of him as a member of the hall of fame, since he does not fit the definition of a hall of famer. It's just like if Neifi Perez is elected and he wasn't, then he has a valid claim to be called a hall of famer, while the excluded McGwire has no claim.

As of this time I would vote for McGwire, but things could change.
