Red face Baseball Steroids on Congress Agenda

I just saw this report that said:

Quote:
Just two weeks before opening day, some of baseball's biggest names will be far from the field, answering questions under oath about what they've seen, and what they've used.

So far, former player and MVP Jose Canseco is the only one to say he'll be there voluntarily. Jason Giambi, Mark McGwire, Rafael Palmeiro, Curt Schilling, Sammy Sosa, and Frank Thomas, as well as baseball Commissioner Bud Selig and the head of the player's union, Don Fehr, could be forced to testify.

Palmeiro declined, saying the hearings fall on his wife's birthday. And Giambi, who played with Canseco on the Oakland A's, says it's highly unlikely he'll go.

The rest, including Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling, are undecided, and clearly uncomfortable with the idea.

I can understand why they would want Canseco, Giambi, Hurt, Sammy, Mac and Raffy........but, why Schilling?

Is it just because of his star status? Why not Clemens or Unit? Is there something that I'm missing here?

I've been going to games since August 8, 1973....and on August 22, 2004, finally, a foul ball came my way. I had to reach for it, and it deflected off the tip of my right index finger. Shoot, if I was only 4 inches taller!

I wonder more about Thomas, he's never been connected in any way to steriods.

There are many like that - someone on the radio the other day said Todd Hundley - and, it make sense - - - got big fast, had the HR surge, then the ligaments started to go...............

I think Congress should go after more retired players - they might get more truth. Less to lose.

Now it's being reported that they will be forced to testify - but none of the reports have Barry Bonds on the list of those who will be chased after..........why?

March 17th could be an interesting day.

An interesting theory - albeit discounted in the offering - http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercu...s/11086672.htm

Quote:
Barry Bonds. No, he's not on the current list of potential witnesses. The speculation: All those called to testify will be granted immunity from prosecution. And if Bonds is granted that immunity, he would be safe from any perjury charges that could arise from his previous testimony before the Balco grand jury. However, perjury charges are notoriously hard to prove, so it seems stupid to exclude the most famous face connected to this issue.

Perhaps Bonds is excluded because he has already testified under oath??? And of course what he testified to under oath before a sealed Grand Jury is private and thus we should not know its contents

Nobody has a clue as to what Congress is after with these subpoenas. Baseball has already toughened up its steroids testing program and both the players and management seem to think that it is working. What more can you want??

IMHO, I guess what they want is to get the impression that the congressmen care about what's happen to national pastime. Although their steps has delayed for at least 20 years.

I'm starting to think that baseball got lucky with the timing on this - had it been Feb. or April, it would have been the lead story on all the sports talk stuff. Now, thanks to March Madness, it's the second story, at best.

Fay Vincent had a good take on this. He says that baseball should take this as an opportunity to step in front of Congress and show them what they are doing about the issue. Foucs on the future rather than the past. This is certainly a better idea than whining about it.

If Congress wants to make a big deal over worrying about the past let them dig for it.
