Red face Mo Rivera Scare

from wire reports..........

Quote:
Closer Mariano Rivera fielded calls from worried friends and family after a rumor spread that he had been in a serious car accident. "I'm fine, I haven't had any accident," Rivera said. Rivera thinks the rumor might have been stemmed from the car accident Yankees' special adviser Reggie Jackson was in Friday. Jackson's SUV was struck from behind by a car driven by Miguel Angel Rivera, identified in some reports only as M. Rivera.

I added to this one. Our own guidry49 called me yesterday and told me that he heard from two different people that there was a wire report that Mo had died in a car crash. So, I sent an e-mail to a friend of mine who is close friends with Rivera.

She called him on his cell and then told me that he was shocked to hear the story but he was fine.

Even 1050 ESPN Radio in NYC had the story by later in the afternoon - but Michael Kay called in from Tampa and said Mo was fine and had no accident.

Seems it was the Bergen Record in NJ - online- that had the report. Man, wouldn't you check that first before running with it?

Man, this is baseball. You gotta stop thinking. Just have fun.

I've been going to games since August 8, 1973....and on August 22, 2004, finally, a foul ball came my way. I had to reach for it, and it deflected off the tip of my right index finger. Shoot, if I was only 4 inches taller!

Have you read The Baseball Same Game?

Obviously not. Being first is far more important than being accurate.

Sad but true

Remember how close CNN came to reporting that George Bush, Sr., had died in Japan??? I think that most news groups try to check things but there is a lot of pressure to be first. I don't know what the Bergen people were thinking.
