Unhappy I Feel Sad For John Olerud

I recently read this:

Quote:
[Yankees GM Brian] Cashman on former Yankees first baseman John Olerud, who's still unsigned after undergoing offseason foot surgery: "He can still play." ...

And, based on what I saw at the end of last season, I would agree. If a winning team needs a 1B with good hands, and who could bat 7th and work the count, Olerud would fit nicely.

If this is the end for Olerud, I feel sad for him. He's a class act that many other ballplayers could learn a thing or two from - no question.

I've been going to games since August 8, 1973....and on August 22, 2004, finally, a foul ball came my way. I had to reach for it, and it deflected off the tip of my right index finger. Shoot, if I was only 4 inches taller!

Money - if the Yankees have offered Olerud a deal, he could have taken them to arbitration and because he made a lot of money on his last deal, the Yankees did not want to risk getting a contract based on that old number.

At least, this is what I heard.

Olerud has seriously declined the last two years. A .733 OPS for a 1B with little power is no bargain. Among the 13 AL 1B's with 400 AB's (i.e. "the regulars") Olerud ranked dead last in OPS, 12th in OWP, and 12th in RCAA.

Olerud has been a fine player and a class act, but at age 36 it may be time to move on.

He may no longer be an All-Star. But, if someone like Minky can help the Sox last year and the Mets this year, Olerud could help someone this year - even at 36, IMHO.

I'm sure if they wanted to, they could have hammered something out.
