Question Hudson Deal With Braves

Are the Braves jumping the gun here? What if he is damaged goods? Why not kick the tires first?

I've been going to games since August 8, 1973....and on August 22, 2004, finally, a foul ball came my way. I had to reach for it, and it deflected off the tip of my right index finger. Shoot, if I was only 4 inches taller!

I thought Hudson had imposed a deadline of yesterday for an extension, otherwise he was going to free angency at the end of the year. Of course most times those kind of statements are meaningless. Was the injury his hip?

It is very hard to sign a guy up during his final season before free agency. He has very little to lose by waiting to see what kind of offers he will get. Sure he could get hurt during the season, but if he gets through the pot of gold will be larger.

All these long-term guaranteed contracts are fiscal lunacy, but that is the nature of the beast. At this time I like this signing by the Braves. They avoided fighting it out with the colossus of the north for a guy who in all probability would have been the most sought after pitching free agent at the end of the season. And, they didn't overpay relative to what this guy is.

Wasn't Mulder the one with the hip questions?

Hudson never referenced the hip problem that bothered him so badly in his two starts against the Twins, which kept him from getting the ball down in the strike zone. Hip rotation is a vital part of the 162-pound Hudson's delivery, but he didn't mention the hip problem at the time, didn't mention it in talking about the team's disappointments; Mulder and others brought it up. It wasn't until after Christmas that Hudson's hip was back to normal, but, even now, he says,"that is no excuse. You win or you lose, and we lost."
