Looking Forward To Next Year
As Edgar Renteria tapped out to end the 2004 baseball season, the following teams started to run through my mind............
.........the 1977 Reds .........the 1979 Yankees .........the 1980 Pirates .........the 1985 Tigers .........the 1989 Dodgers .........the 1991 Reds .........the 1998 Marlins .........the 2003 Angels .........the 2004 Marlins............ and, right away, I started looking forward to the 2005 season......... but, of course, congrats to the 2004 World Champion Boston Red Sox. The Curse is over. The 86 year wait is over. That must feel great. Switching gears, and talking about not feeling great - - Tony LaRussa has now been swept in a World Series in both leagues. Is that a record? Not exactly one to be proud of, for sure. His 2004 Cardinals really got steam rolled in this series - like his 1990 A's were in that World Series. That will always stand out on his resume now to me.

Bill Mckechnie was spept twice also. His 1928 Cards and 1939 Reds also were smoked 4-0 by the Yankees. Charlie almost qualified. He managed the 1932 and 1938 Cubs who were swept. In 1932 he took over from Rogers Hornsby and in 1938 he was fired mid-season.

Nothing better than next year. I don't care what team you root for, 2005 looks good right now.

LaRussa's the only manager to get swept in the WS in each league. He's the second to both sweep and be swept (of course, he had done that already) (the other was Alston with the Dodgers in '63 and '66), and the second to get swept more than once (the other was McKechnie for St. Louis in '28 and Cincinatti in '39). Miller Huggins swept the WS with the Yankees and kinda got swept with them, too, in '22. Similarly, Charlie Grimm nearly got swept twice with the Cubs in '32 and '38.
So, after all that, LaRussa is the: First to get swept in each league, Second (and a half) to both sweep and get swept, Second (and a half) to get swept twice, and Second to get swept with two different teams.

Tony LaRussa has never been swept in a World Series. LaRussa has never won, nor lost a World Series game, let alone a World Series. Tony LaRussa's players are another story. There is a big difference between the two.

OK, I should have said "LaRussa's teams have now been swept in a World Series in both leagues. "

Crash
How do you feel now in hindsight behind 1) The acquisition of Hideki Matsui, what he is being paid, and how he fits in, benefits, or doesn't, with the Yankees 2) Also the same question behind the A-Rod acquisition I ask as I see the Yankees occasionally and you follow them rabidly. |

Matsui, IIRC, is at $7 million a year - with one year left. IMHO, one of the best FA signings ever by the Yankees. He adds so much and there's nothing on the down side at all. I hope, strongly, that he comes back to NY after 2005.
A-Rod? IIRC, he's got 6 years left on his contract - and, it's not like NY is paying the whole tab. Again, IIRC, NY pays him about $16 million a year. The jury, for me, on A-Rod is still out. In terms of who he replaced, Soriano, I'm thrilled to have him instead. But, there's still way too much to be written in the book about his days with NY. Ask me again around 2007. ![]()

Matsui isn't worth the pricetag, but he's a good enough player, and that was the going rate for him at the time.

Disagree, strongly. Matsui was the 7th best batter in the AL last year. How many MVP candidates make "just" $7 million a year these days? Plus, it's not like it's really $7 million because he brings in tons and tons of revenue for the Yankees from the market in Japan. His contract practically pays for itself.

I would have to side with Steve on this issue: I thought Matsui was good value for the money

Papi Ortiz, $4.5 million. Still, I agree, Matsui is a bargain. |

Ouch......and double ouch. As for Matsui- if nothing else- he fits into that "Yankee" personna- quiet, solid, plays hard, (grounds into 2nd way too much), reminds me somewhat of Paul O'Neill without the shattered water coolers. But at $7M- a HUGE bargain.
