Red face Hey, Franco. Leave the game. Take the cannoli.

This from the N.Y. Daily News today:

Quote:
Mets reliever John Franco may have pitched his way into another jam - but this one has to do with his alleged ties to mobsters.

According to FBI documents, the one-time closer chummed around with several high-ranking members of the Bonanno crime family - even inviting some into the Mets clubhouse before games.

Franco also left free tickets for his Bonanno buddies for games at Shea Stadium and on the road, according to a source familiar with the documents.

Given the opportunity yesterday, Franco failed to put out the fire on the controversy.

In a statement released through his agent, Franco said he would not comment "regarding the specifics" in the documents, first reported by the Web site ganglandnews.com

"I am proud to be an Italian-American, and have lived my life in a respectable fashion.'

As it also states in the News article, Franco could be called as a witness for the murder trial next year of mob boss Vito Rizzuto.

While the article does not mention this, it could also been seen as interesting that the location of Franco's home (Todt Hill, Staten Island) is renown for its mobster residents. What's the old line? If you hang out in a barber shop long enough, eventually you'll end up getting your hair cut........

Now, granted, this is all just whispers now. But, baseball should stay on top of this like white on rice. And, if Franco is found to have mob ties, he should be banned from the game - esp. since he has hinted that he wants to stay in the game after his playing days.

I've been going to games since August 8, 1973....and on August 22, 2004, finally, a foul ball came my way. I had to reach for it, and it deflected off the tip of my right index finger. Shoot, if I was only 4 inches taller!

More from Franco on this: http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/ba...p-214413c.html

Quote:
Asked about his name coming up in a criminal case and allegations that he provided game tickets and clubhouse passes to members of the Bonanno crime family in the mid-1990s, Franco replied, "It's hard for me to comment on it when I know nothing about it and know that I've done nothing wrong. That's all I'll say about it right now."

I'm shocked that the Astros have now signed Franco.

I wonder how mlb feels about it?

Probably about the same as they do about Rose's mob ties (or for that matter Ty Cobb's)....Sargent Schultz' signature line comes to mind.
