Question Cardinals - Red Sox World Series

Any predictions or comments?

Should be a lot of scoring, no?

I've been going to games since August 8, 1973....and on August 22, 2004, finally, a foul ball came my way. I had to reach for it, and it deflected off the tip of my right index finger. Shoot, if I was only 4 inches taller!

I'm calling it now: the Twins will not win.

I think the offense on both teams is about equal - in total. It will be interesting to see Ortiz play 1B in the 3 games in St. Louis. If God gives Curt Schilling the strengh to compete one more time, that will help Boston. If the Sox pen pitches like it did in the last 4 games of the ALCS, Boston will win the Series. Otherwise, it could be a close Series. If LaRussa is smart, he'll look at Reggie Sanders past WS stats and come up with another plan for LF. Sanders is a great man - but a WS choker, ala' Soriano.

Reggie Sanders is one of those guys I look at every year and say "How is this guy still playing?" And then I look and see he has serviceable stats....actully better than a lot of the other players out there. I guess if Ruben Sierra and Julio Franco can still play this game, I shouldn't be surprised.

I'll be pulling for the Cardinals, I just like their workmanlike attitude and the non "look at me" attitude that seems to permeate the Red Sox (at least in my opinion).

Well given my track record in the ALCS (Sox in a cake walk) I shouldn't be allowed to make a prediction but what the heck Sox in 6.

Newer pointed out that in the Red Sox' past four WS appearances, they have lost in 7 games to the team that wound up having the best record in the NL that decade ('46 Cards in the 1940s, '67 Cards in the 1960s, '75 Reds in the 1970s, '86 Mets in the 1980s).

Guess who has the best record in the NL so far this decade?

History repeats itself. St. Louis in 7.

Actually, I don't think it should be all that close, except Carpenter's out and Marquis has looked used up. If Schilling's not able to perform, that won't make a difference at all.

I'm from Minnesota, and everybody knows the Vikings lost 4 Super Bowls. They shouldn't have lost to the Chiefs following the '69 season, but the in other games they lost--to the Dolphins, Raiders, and Steelers--they lost to some of the best franchises in NFL history. I think that's sort of the same deal with the Red Sox. Stan the Man said this is the best Cardinals lineup ever, and that's good enough for me.

One interesting thing to watch in this Series--Neither team has a top-of-the-line closer. Isringhausen and Foulke are very good, but not in the same class as Rivera and Lidge, IMO.

Very interesting stat there.
As of this moment, I'm now going Cards in 6 - Over-taxing their pitchers in the LCS and the loss of the DH in games 3, 4, and 5 hurt the Sox.

Manny can thank Bellhorn for not having a Timo Perez day in Game 1

Sox in Six.

Did Selig get one right this time with the ASG determining home-field advantage?

I refuse to give Selig credit for getting anything right as a matter of principle.

He replaced one arbitrary, non-sensical rule with another. I don't think it's necessarily any better or worse than the alternating rule, but it still rewards one team for something they didn't do. If the advantage went to the team with the best regular season record, that would make a lot more sense to me.

Did I really hear Johnny Pesky call Schilling "the best pitcher we've had here since Clemens" in the pre-game last night? I had the sound low, maybe I misheard it? If not, is that a slap on Pedro, or what?

Pedro who?

I can see people running with the "Schilling is pitching on an amputated leg" story

Jimmy Key won Game 6 of the 1996 WS - and pitched with two tears in his rotator cuff in the process - - - he should have hired the same PR guy as Schilling.

Pesky's what, 86 years old? It shows.

I imagine old-timers would like Schilling--big guy, gritty, proudly right-wing, throws a ton of innings, as compared to Pedro, who's skinny and somewhat injury-prone and a foreigner, fer crissakes. But I think the numbers will show that Pedro's run from 1998 to 2003, especially the first three years, is as good as anyone's.
