Default Hold the Bus for this Guy

All Best Wishes to Forum members for a Happy and Healthy New Year. Here's one last question:

Who was the last player to hit more HR's in a season than the reat of his teammates combined?

Was it the one who just broke his SLG? Barry Bonds?

Babe actually never outhomered his whole team, he outhomered other entire teams. Without Gehrig (1923 rook), that might've been the case. 1920, 1921, he never did this either.

I think we're overdue for an extra clue here.

Babe Ruth, BOS, 1919. Outhomered his team 29-4 for a total of 33 HR's.

I thought I remembered hearing Babe did that, I just could not recall the details.

I'd heard that when Babe hit 60 (1927), he'd outhomered _other_ teams. The 1927 Pirates hit 54 combined.

I'd made the easy mistake of looking at Babe's 50+ HR years, but by then, others started to catch up. Especially w/Gehrig in the lineup after 1923, Ruth wasn't outhomering the other Yanks combined, so Babe's Boston years (1914-1919) or Yankee pre-Gehrig years (1920-1922) seemed a safe choice.

Babe's also the only likely choice since Aaron played in an era where this wasn't likely, especially since Aaron's highest single-season is 47 HR's.

Sorry for the late response. I'm just getting up after a late night of partying.

The Babe certainly did it in 1919. He also did it in '18, when he had 11 to his teammates' 4. In fact, it was done 10 other times, though not for more than 50 years. But, the Babe is not the most recent.

Nor is it Barry Bonds. In 2001, he hit 73 of his team's 235, less than a third.

Here's a clue:

A four-time AL All Star, his career ended over 50 years ago and he played in only one decade.

Was this done during WWII when lots of sluggers were fighting for their country?

PS,

And my final answer is.......................

Stan Spence, who hit 18 of the 1944 Washington Senators' 33 HR's. AL MVP in 1942/44/46/47. His career lasted from 1940-49.

Think you mean All-Star - not MVP.

Ah, I win the prize but defeated on a technicality by our Fearless Leader. Oh well.

Anyway, I hit an idea when >50 years ago was mentioned, and was a single decade. I figured it had to be during wartime. So, from 1941-45, I searched all the AL teams and finally came across his name. I was typing a little fast so that explains the error.

BTW, YL, great question. I had to do some research on this but the last clue was the one.
