Question SOTS Questions

I've been doing the SOTS features for a year now: http://www.netshrine.com/sotsarchive.html

I'm thinking of changing the format on these - away from the current format, and more towards a "blog" type format, still to be found within the NDF. This will enable me to post "thoughts" etc. more frequently and from whatever location that I might be using. Of course, at times, the features may be shorter in this format - but, I think the greater frequency will offset that. Any thoughts on this potential change that you would be willing to share?

Related, most "blogs" allow for a "feedback" option. I'm still on the fence with this wrinkle. Is it just me (?) or do the majority of feedback posts in blogs fall into one of these buckets: [1] You're great, let me kiss your behind. [2] I think you're a moron, and I'm going to tell you because I think I'm smarter and you don't know me anyway. [3] I'm not really saying anything here of value, I just want to make a post because I'm bored.

I dunno, am I wrong there? If I'm not, I wonder if allowing for providing feedback in a blog, publically, adds any value.

Of course, I could allow for others to send e-mail feedback and if it makes sense, I can post it for them. Or, better yet, I can set the controls to "moderate" posts made and then they can sit in a queue for review. I'm thinking out loud here as I type this, and just brainstorming ideas.........any thoughts on these?

Related to allowing feedback posts, should it be for registered members of the NDF, some subset of that, or open to the public, meaning you do not have to me a member of the NDF to post? Again, just throwing all the options out here to see what you think.

I've been going to games since August 8, 1973....and on August 22, 2004, finally, a foul ball came my way. I had to reach for it, and it deflected off the tip of my right index finger. Shoot, if I was only 4 inches taller!

I think a blog would be a very good idea for you. No need for feedback unless you think it will provide good discussion.

Blogs are overrated. The average person isn't going to contribute a whole lot, unless you like smarmy comments. If you are going to offer a feedback option, you might want to limit it to NetShrine members. Remember what Alexander Hamilton once said: "The masses are asses."

I'm not sure about that, assuming that the SOTS blog will be open to forum members only.

At any rate, if you feel more comfortable doing a blog, go for it. If it's worth reading, I'll tune in. If not, I'll tune out

I don't have a preference...I've enjoyed the SOTS, so I'll probably enjoy anything you put on the blog. I'd leave the feedback option in there...I think you'll get similar comments to those that you currently receive on the SOTS forum.

I like the current SOTS format... I could be wrong, but I think in a few years people are going to find blogs so... so... early 21st century.

The feedback on blogs can be controlled, sure... but, the SOTS format with one longer essay/article, allows for a reasonably focused discussion.

How would moving the SOTS to a blog style change things from as they are now? If you set up the blog outside of Netshrine then I can recognize the benefit of getting more eyes on them.

Regarding comments, I think you should think about this carefully. You had to spend a lot of time refereeing commenters in Netshrine's previous incarnation so keep that in mind.

A blog without comments might be easier for you but don't be disappointed if there's not much feedback since comments seem to multiply when there's back and forth, be it good or bad.

You can also use an outside blog as a stepping stone to NDF for the readers, though I don't know if you want to expand things at this time.

I think a blog would be good for the SOTS format. I think you should give the comments section a try. You might actually get some good discourse that way.

I'm trying to stay away from any of the blog "systems" out there - because I cannot access them at all times, like I can the NDF now. Basically, what I was thinking of was a "forum" within the NDF that would be read only - to serve as the NDF SOTS "blog."

Excellent point about allowing comments and the work that can bring......that's why I'm thinking that it may be better to not allow them, or allow them under some control, rather than have it wide open.

Derek Zumsteg's (et al) U.S.S Mariner blog (http://www.ussmariner.com) recently added comments, something he wrestled with for some time. As it turns out, he's been pleasantly surprised with the quality of the comments posted so far.

But the logistics of allowing comments at all is a bit of a barrier. I'd suggest starting without comments; worry about whether you want to allow comments later.

I'm okay with a blog but also okay with the status quo

Default Blogs are great

I think a blog would be great. My blog reader has become the first thing I check in the AM, even before email
