Default Fred McGriff = Early Wynn?

Crime Dog's 2004 tour smells a lot like Wynn's 1963.
Does it matter?

I've been going to games since August 8, 1973....and on August 22, 2004, finally, a foul ball came my way. I had to reach for it, and it deflected off the tip of my right index finger. Shoot, if I was only 4 inches taller!

I don't think this bad ending to McGriff's career will mean anything to his HoF chances. He stands or falls on his career. This makes me think - here are all the firstbasemen in the league in 1987 (his rookie year) that played 1B primarily in their careers (thus no Brett/Schmidt in this group), and at least had a few decent seasons. Is he good enough above his contemporaries? Murray is in, and McGwire and Palmeiro will be. Does he stand that much above Mattingly, Garvey, Hrbek, Clark, et al?

Wynn made it to 300 wins. 500 HRs seem very much in question.

To Mako's point, you could say he's around Will Clark..........

Well I'm impressed, looking at Steve's stats - I guess it just depends how many 1B from one era is enough in the Hall

McGriff is the anti Wynn.

McGriff's got excellent credentials, regardless of whether he ever hits 500 HR.

All Wynn has his favor is the silly "wins" stat. His 105 RSAA are in imminent danger of being dropped from the top 200 list. The only question is whether that happens this week, next week or slightly later. At least 2 of a good sized group of active pitchers are ready to kick him out of the top 200.

More and more I see McGriff being right on the border. Lotta first basemen from this era though, especially with Thomas and Bagwell coming around the bend.
