Beginning of the year, who would have predicted that the Indians would have 4 all stars? And that they would be more than "mercy" picks?
Way to go Torre! I'm kind of surprised he took Victor Martinez over Jorge Posada, but if you've read my posts, you know I've been stumping for Victor for a month or more now.

According to the * here, Torre didn't pick Martinez.
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1834325 He was chosen by a vote of the players, coaches and managers. When did baseball start doing that?

I had to reach for it, and it deflected off the tip of my right index finger. Shoot, if I was only 4 inches taller! Have you read The Baseball Same Game? |

I guess I didn't see that *. It's been in effect for a couple seasons now. I kind of forgot about it, however.

I'm happy that Vic and Ronnie made the team, but I don't believe they are All-Stars -- yet. But that's just MY definition of an All-Star: a player who has proven himself to be among the very best at his position. A guy who is basically a rookie (but not officially) hasn't "proven" anything yet, except that he's had a great first half and looks like he will be a fine player for years. Well, when that happens, he should THEN be an All-Star.
CC is a fine pick, since he has a few fine years under his belt. Belliard is probably still being called "Rafael" by out-of-town announcers. He's off to a good start with the Tribe, and he hustles and looks good out there, but I wouldn't call him an All-Star. To me, the Tribe has a bunch of fine players who look like they will be All-Stars in a few years. Jody Gerut, Cliff Lee, Jake Westbrook, and a bunch of guys in AA who are a couple more years away. |
