Wink Foulke Flag Flap

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1833877

Not shocked. It's not the first time. IIRC, Biggio was once told to take off his Sunshine Kids pin on his cap. Pretty sure that Billy Martin was told that he could not wear a cross pin in the "Y" space in his Yankee cap.

Actually, Foulke should do what Ortiz does. IIRC, David Ortiz has a patch of the DR flag on his glove. Small, but it's there - unless my eyes are shot.

Why not do the same?

I've been going to games since August 8, 1973....and on August 22, 2004, finally, a foul ball came my way. I had to reach for it, and it deflected off the tip of my right index finger. Shoot, if I was only 4 inches taller!

Here's what Foulke is really complaining about: the gag order. He should quit whining, wear the flag like ALL players will today, then shut up and pitch.

His old man is fighing overseas, and Foulke is making millions playing a kid's game, and whining about personal expression. And his dad will be reading about it in Stars & Stripes -- overseas edition. Sheesh!

MLB made the right decision. Foulke was using his cap to make a political statement.

I'm certain that, if any player chose to use his cap to make the opposite statement, there would have been an outcry to force him to stop.

After all, they call it a "uniform" for a reason - so that everyone looks the same.

Imagine what would happen to Foulke's dad if he wanted to wear a patch on his military uniform, in support of his son, that had the Red Sox on it.........

Steve -- they'd probably not give him too much grief about it.

Overseas, the military is somewhat looser than stateside. I worked with a guy who had some big hair (think Oscar Gamble) and packed it down when he was in uniform. When he got stateside, his first shirt got him high and tight in a hurry.

MLB is right on this one. The only reason this is causing a flap is that most of us approve of the Foulke's sentiment. If he went out there with a Swastika or KKK symbol we would be going nuts.

As a business MLB has to protect its brand by staying away from individual political statements by its players.
