I've been going to games since August 8, 1973....and on August 22, 2004, finally, a foul ball came my way. I had to reach for it, and it deflected off the tip of my right index finger. Shoot, if I was only 4 inches taller!

I'll be surprised if he gets 30 some starts, but you never know with the way he works out.

That could work in his favor. I've thought about the fact that you will have a guy, now 41, soon to be 42, running the bases in the major leagues - when he has not really run the bases on a regular basis in what is probably close to a quarter century. That sounds like a chance to get hurt. Lots of guys get hurt running the bases, sliding badly, etc. But, then on the other hand, this is a guy who runs, on his own, all the time. So, he should be able to handle the running part.

Still, as a Yankee fan, I can tell you that every time he fielded a bunt or covered first on a play, in the last 3 or 4 years, your heart stopped each time - because you had the feeling that it was a groin or leg injury in the making.

Time will tell............

makes no sense since he only failed to get 30 starts once since 1995 and that 2002 with 29 starts.

Since 1995 he has been one of the most durable of starters.

he's 4th during that period in starts.....so Steve, relax, he'll be just fine....as always

Elmo - anything that happened in the past was when he was younger.
Shoot, in 1995, he was 32.
It ain't easy turning 41, and I know!

He's got to get on base to run the bases. It's not like he's going to be Rickey Henderson up there with running the bases 2-3 times every night. He'll get at most 2-3 plate appearances per start and he'll get on base, what, an eighth of the time, being generous?

I suppose it's possible that pitchers in the NL are more likely to get hurt because of the extra wear and tear they face by batting once in a while, but it doesn't seem like all that much extra work.

I don't think there's much chance we'll see Clemens running the bases - he's only 2 for 17 since 1998 and I really don't expect to se much improvement.

For 2004 I think he gives the 'Stros 28 to 30 starts and 150 to 180 IP with some fading after the All Star break - a W-L in the area of 9-7 seems likely

Funny, I see to recall Clemens reaching base, running the bases, and me as a Yankee fan, crossing my fingers, during this post-season in the WS.

Clemens was 1-2 in game 4 of the WS. He led off the 5th inning with a single. After Soriano struck out, Jeter GiDP to end the inning.

20 games started, a record of 9 wins and 4 losses, 133 innings pitched, and an ERA just about the league average.

Well, glad he got the 9 wins out of the way first.

My earlier comments look remarkably pessimistic, thus far
