The other thread (http://www.netshrine.com/vbulletin2/...ead.php?t=7551) was getting a little big so we are going to start a new one. Anyone else reading anything interesting?

I am plowing through Neil Gaiman's Sandman series of Graphic Novels. They are some of the best stories that I have read.

I'm reading Larry Dierker's "This Ain't Brain Surgery," which Santa left in my stocking.

I asked for 13 different books (3 baseball) for gifts (not greedy, eh?) and got one. I've already finished it - it's Albom's latest (Five People You Meet in Heaven). It's a nice book, packaged very much the same as Tuesdays with Morrie, and does a pretty good job of staying poignant without going over the line into treacle. It is light reading though, not groundbreaking. It'll make you reminisce and think about your life and those you've dealt with, but probably without causing you to undergo life altering changes. I still really enjoyed it, and it is definitely a good afternoon read, esp. in this New Years resolutions time of year. It would be just as good if you wait for the paperback or to borrow it from the library.
(editorial comment) It's just nice to see a guy who's a (gasp) modern sportswriter who also really knows how to write. It always seems to me that he is pleasantly tolerating Lupica on ESPNs SportsReporters in an "I don't have to try and out-yell you here, I'm cool with what I've got" sort of way. (/ec) |

I've finally worked my way through And the dead shall rise: the murder of Mary Phagan and the lynching of Leo Frank. While it's built around Phagan's death and Frank's hanging by a mob who took him from his prison cell, it's also an intersting look at the South, at politics, and at anti-Semitism.
It's a long read at over 700 pages, but it's worth the time. I'd worried about making 700 pages out of one incident, but the author makes it work by examining the bigger picture in which the events took place. |

I'm going to start Moneyball after the New Year. I also have a pile of used paperbacks to work my way through after a hiatus this fall, I'll probably start with a John LeCarre book.

just finished an unusual mystery called Motherless Brooklyn by jonathan Lethem and Zodiac by Neal Stephenson(heard his later books were better). Average plotline, but this guy can write. In thelast few weeks, also read The Painted Bird by Kosinski, The Fixer by Malamud, and reread Ender's Game by Card
time is always tight, so I'm glad I read VERY fast--oh yeah, having no kids helps best wishes to everyone for the New Year |

also wanted to mention, for those of you who like LeCarre, you might want to try Kyle Mills, Stephen Hunter, or Vince Flynn

The only one I ever read is "The Looking Glass War" and I like LeCarre's style very much. I want to read more about LeCarre, what book will be a good start?
Thanks.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy is a good one. It is the first book in the series with George Smiley. The other one I think is a good starting point is the Spy Who Came in From the Cold.
