Saw the trailer for this many moons ago when I saw Monsters Inc. Yeah, I know it's a Disney G movie - and, it's a baseball movie (rumored to be) featuring the DevilRays - - - not exactly like the Yanks in Pride of the Yankees or the Cards in The Winning Team. But, the screenwriter was Mike Rich - who also did "Finding Forrester." It's due out at the end of March - - could be another "Rudy" - maybe? Have you heard anything about the flick? Would you go see it?

I have two friends who have read "The Oldest Rookie" upon which this film is based. Both said it is a good heartwarming book, not a total tearjerker, about 4 of 5 stars. If they get Dennis Quaid to do anything but give his trademark "grin from hell" (quote attributed to my wife) it could be a sleeper a la Rudy. I know she'll go see it at least.

This past weekend I saw the preview for 'The Rookie' - starring Dennis Quaid as Jim Morris.
Morris, you will remember, made the transition from high school baseball coach to 35-yr old rookie reliever for TB in 1999. He played the 99-00 seasons, compiling 15 better-than-league-average innings in 21 games. His final line: 21 G, 15 IP, 13 H, 8 ER, 2 HR, 9 BB, 13 K, 4.80 ERA, 4.92 lgERA. I don't know whether this will be a good baseball movie (it is made by Disney, and it is 'based on a true story'), but Morris' story is both heartwarming and a testament to the level of relievers in the majors. It will be released on March 29th. The film's official site: http://disney.go.com/disneypictures/rookie/index.html

It will not be setting any box office records, for certain.

Not unless they throw in a bunch of orcs and wizards - or if Morris's romantic interest is played by Cameron Diaz.

Could be crap? But, as I've said, it could be another "Rudy" too? If you don't like Rudy, well, you can't belong to the Boys Club anymore - - - hard to be a guy and not like that movie.

Heck, some consider The Natural schlocky, but it's a good kind of schlock - the kind of stuff that every kid (well, boys) dream about when they're young.
And yes, I like Rudy - even though the kid is a little creepy.

I didn't think Rudy was a particularly well-made film. I really liked Hoosiers, so I'm not immune to that kind of ilk. Rudy is a good movie to watch when you're taking care of a baby (unlike the Talented Mr. Ripley, where you get upset when the little one cries at a pivotal scene).
I prefer my films a little darker, or just flat-out stooopid. Some of the feel-good stuff is just tripe and pablum for the masses. Maybe I'm a cynical guy, but this one about Morris reeks of it. |
