Default Boston gives Ortiz extension... Ortiz gives tea leaves?

Boston gave David Ortiz a 2 year extension with a team option for a 3rd.

Quote:
According to the Associated Press, Ortiz, who is making nearly $4.6 million this season, will earn $5.25 million next year and $6.5 million in 2006. If the option is picked up, he would receive $7.75 million in 2007, or he could be bought out for $750,000.

Ortiz agrees to extension

During the press conference Ortiz suggested Pedro still wants to finish up with Boston. Wishful thinking? Cause for hope? Just a ballplayer talking?

Quote:
It was Ortiz's good friend, Martinez, who not only urged the Red Sox to sign the former Twin prior to last season, but also advised Ortiz this week to extend his stay in Boston. And Ortiz said yesterday he feels Martinez would like to end his career in Boston.

Well, locking up Ortiz for a couple of years is good news for Red Sox fans. I'm not sure what to make of the Martinez comment - I'm sure if they are friends he is trying to talk Pedro into signing on.

On the Ortiz signing - one of the docketing clerks here in my firm heard this news on the radio yesterday and was so excited about it he sent an email about it out to the whole firm! I thought it was very cute.

THey have the same agent, too. More tea leaves, I think...

That's a lot of money for Ortiz, a platoon power hitter with no defensive position.

But in the AL - you can get away with that.

Between the extension and all the money he got to film Shrek 2, Ortiz will be rolling in dough this year.

I've been going to games since August 8, 1973....and on August 22, 2004, finally, a foul ball came my way. I had to reach for it, and it deflected off the tip of my right index finger. Shoot, if I was only 4 inches taller!

Have you read The Baseball Same Game?

Probably a good signing. It isn't terribly long and the money is not outrageous.

Theo echoed both those points in an interview Friday.
