Tanyon Sturtze To The Yankees?

The Sun could not confirm by press time whether a deal had been completed. Despite being told to pack his belongings, Sturtze said he had not received official word of a deal to New York, and 51s pitching coach Roger McDowell said Sturtze would be the starter in tonight's game against the New Orleans Zephyrs.

But the scene in the clubhouse after the game made it clear that something was up. As teammates shook hands and congratulated Sturtze, one 51s teammate shouted, "We're getting Bubba (Crosby) back!" and another said "No, we're getting (Scott) Proctor!" referring to two Las Vegas 51s traded last season in a deal involving Yankees infielder Robin Ventura.

51s manager Terry Kennedy confirmed that the Yankees had scouted Sturtze during last weekend's series in Sacramento. Sturtze, 33, is 3-0 with a 2.50 ERA in six starts.

Actually, Sturtze is as good as several pitchers currently in rotations around the majors.

Actually, I did some sorts on the SBE today on him.
For guys his age or older, over the last three years, he's been one of the worst pitchers in the AL (his league).

He's Jeff Juden like.

There was this guy named Ruffing, had lost 20 games two years running and had an ERA lower than league average once in a five-year career when he was traded to the Yankees. He turned out all right, I hear.

Ruffing, before the Yankees acquired him: -54 RSAA
Sturtze, with his career IP prorated out to Ruffing's figure: -79 RSAA

And the only reason why we ever heard of Ruffing was because he was a historical outlier. Once you have to resort to outliers, especially when it's the beginning of making a case, that's a case of a losing argument.
