1) Free agent LF Barry Bonds accepted the Giants's offer of salary arbitration.
By accepting a team's offer of salary arbitration, Bonds is considered to be signed by the team, with his 2002 salary to be determined by arbitration. Of course, the sides could agree to a salary, or to a multiyear contract, prior to arbitration. Bonds won his 8th Babe Ruth Award, for Baseball Immortals's selection for MVP, and has his Baseball Immortals area at http://www.baseballimmortals.net/Bon...arry_bonds.htm 2) The Cubs signed free agent LF Moises Alou to a 3 year, $27 million contract, with a mutual option for 2005. Alou had a productive season in 2001, hitting .554 SLG, .396 OBA, .949 OPS, 33 RCAA, .659 OWP, 8.03 RC/G, 110 RC in 136 games in 2001. It was his 3rd consecutive time, excluding him missing the 1999 season, with 30+ RCAA and a .900+ OPS. Alou has a .896 career OPS, compared to his league average of .763 and positional average of .800, 213 RCAA and 162 RCAP. 3) The Cubs traded OF Michael Tucker to the Royals for a player to be named later. Tucker hit .415 SLG, .322 OBA, .738 OPS, -9 RCAA, .437 OWP, 4.53 RC/G, 60 RC in 149 games in 2001--86 with the Reds and 63 with the Cubs. He has a .776 career OPS, compared to his league average of .780 and positional average of .819, -9 RCAA and -32 RCAP. 4) Free agents 2B Bret Boone and 3B David Bell accepted the Mariners's offer of salary arbitration. Boone had a huge fluke season in 2001, hitting .578 SLG, .372 OBA, .950 OPS, 53 RCAA, .718 OWP, 7.90 RC/G, 132 RC in 158 games. In his 9 previous seasons, Boone the only time Boone had either a positive RCAA or a .800+ OPS was 1994, while the only times he had a positive RCAP were 1994-95. Boone has a .756 career OPS, compared to his league average of .735 and 2B average of .735, -48 RCAA and -4 RCAP. 5) The Rockies traded 2B Pokey Reese to the Redsox for C Scott Hatteberg. So, the Redsox end up as the losers in the competition to avoid being the ones hurt by Reese's bad play. Hatteberg hit .345 SLG, .332 OBA, .678 OPS, -9 RCAA, .394 OWP, 4.07 RC/G, 33 RC in 94 games in 2001. He has a .771 career OPS, compared to his league average of .775 and C average of .718, -6 RCAA and 31 RCAP. The Rocky Mountain News reports the Rockies "aren't likely to tender a contract to Hatteberg, which will make him a free agent. The hope is that by acquiring him on Wednesday, they had a day in which to lay the groundwork to sign him for a pay cut of more than 20 percent from his salary last season, the maximum cut allowed for a player who is tendered a contract by his current team. Hatteberg, 32, earned $1.05 million in 2001." 6) The Mets re-signed LF Benny Agbayani, who would have been eligible for salary arbitration, to a 1 year, $600,000 contract and signed 1B-OF Mark Johnson to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training. Agbayani hit .399 SLG, .364 OBA, .763 OPS, -2 RCAA, .478 OWP, 4.77 RC/G, 41 RC in 91 games in 2001. He has a .834 career OPS, compared to his league average of .790 and positional average of .843, 21 RCAA and 2 RCAP. 7) The Giants hired Joe Lefebrve as 1B coach. 8) The Rangers signed free agent P Dave Burba to 1 year, $2 million contract. Burba had a terrible year in 2001, with a 6.21 ERA and -28 RSAA. He had between 11 and 18 RSAA in each of the previous 3 years. Burba has a 4.46 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.44, and -5 RSAA. 9) The following free agents rejected their team's offer of salary arbitration-- Indians--RF Juan Gonzalez A's--OF Johnny Damon Dodgers--P Chan Ho Park Reds--Ps Pete Harnisch, Joey Hamilton, Jose Rijo Rockies--Ps Dan Miceli, Brian Bohanon Phillies--P Ricky Bottalico These players have until January 8 to re-sign with their old teams, or the old teams will lose the right to sign them until May 1. 10) I haven't seen anything that mentions whether the following players accepted or declined their teams offers of arbitration-- Yankees--INF Luis Sojo, P Mark Wohlers A's--OF Ron Gant Diamondbacks--P Mike Morgan Braves--INF Keith Lockhart Cubs--1B Ron Coomer Rockies--P Jay Powell Pirates--P Josias Manzanillo Cardinals--P T.J. Mathews 11) The Padres re-signed P Kevin Jarvis, who would have been eligible for salary arbitration, to a 3 year, $9 million contract. The Padres get a stupidity award for thinking Jarvis is worth $3 million a year. He had a 4.79 ERA and -18 RSAA in 32 starts in 2001. It was the 5th time in his 7 year career that Jarvis had a double digit negative RSAA and he has a 5.91 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.39, and -94 RSAA. 12) According to several reports, from NY and LA, the Mets and Angels could be close to a trade that would send Mo Vaughn to the Mets. According to the New York Times, "Money would be a major factor in a Vaughn deal. The Mets could offer some players who are signed for less money and fewer years than Vaughn, like first baseman Todd Zeile and shortstop Rey Ordóñez, or the teams could expand the deal and trade closers. The Angels' Troy Percival has interested the Mets and wants out of Anaheim, and the Mets could be persuaded to deal Armando Benitez." According to the NY Daily News, "sources said it could come together before the end of the week," while "sources said it would likely end up being Vaughn for Zeile and a starting pitcher, with Steve Trachsel, Glendon Rusch and Bruce Chen each a possibility." 13) According to the Toronto Sun, trading RF Raul Mondesi is still a top priority for the BlueJays, with GM J.P. Ricciardi continuing to talk with Mets GM Steve Phillips. 14) Former Tigers CF Chet Lemon had "rare and life-threatening surgery for the removal of his spleen, which had enlarged to many times its normal size and weighed 7 pounds." He's in stable condition and his wife says, "The doctors can't believe how well he is progressing." An article in the Detroit Free Press seems to imply that, while the surgery was very risky, the dangerous part of Lemon's condition is now over with. 15) The Redsox signed free agent P John Burkett to a 2 year, $11 million contract. The Redsox get to be the ones to overpay for a 36 year old who is not likely to ever reproduce his 2001 success. Burkett had a career year, with a 3.04 ERA and 33 RSAA in 34 starts. It was just the 4th time in his 12 year career that he had a positive RSAA and the first time he had more than 4. Burkett has a 4.23 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.22, and -8 RSAA. 16) The Redsox signed 1B Tony Clark, who was claimed off waivers from the Tigers last month and would have been eligible for salary arbitration, to 1 year contract. 17) The Phillies invited 3B Dave Hollins, INF Dave Doster, C Todd Pratt and P Amaury Telemaco to spring training as non roster invitees. 18) According to the Boston Herald, the Redsox "are within striking distance of signing [Johnny] Damon, a free agent, to a long-term contract, a source close to those talks said yesterday." 19) The Angels signed free agent P Dennis Cook to a 1 year, $1.25 million contract. Cook had a 4.53 ERA and -2 RSAA in 62 games in 2001--43 with the Mets and 19 with the Phillies. He has a 3.93 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.16, and 25 RSAA. 20) According to the LA Daily News, the Dodgers are close to signing free agent P Hideo Nomo. 21) According to the Arizona Republic, the Diamondbacks are very close to signing free agent P David Wells. According to owner Jerry Colangelo, "It's not if, it's only when." 22) According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Brewers are considering non tendering Ps Jimmy Haynes and Jeff D'Amico. 23) The Brewers signed OF Derrick Gibson and P Derrin Ebert to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training. 24) The Astros non tendered OF Glen Baker, which makes him a free agent. Barker had just 30 PA in 70 games in 2001 and hit .083 SLG, .233 OBA, .317 OPS, -6 RCAA, .000 OWP, 0 RC. He has a .653 career OPS, compared to his league average of .793 and CF average of .781, -13 RCAA and -14 RCAP in 197 career PA in 235 games during his 3 year career. 25) The Royals designated utilityman Donnie Sadler for assignment. Sadler hit .211 SLG, .243 OBA, .454 OPS, -23 RCAA, .113 OWP, 1.77 RC/G, 11 RC in 93 games in 2001--39 with the Reds and 54 with the Royals. He has a .569 career OPS, compared to his league average of .779 and positional average of .747, -42 RCAA and -35 RCAP.

On to # 14, I'm glad to hear that Chet is OK, that sounds like a highly painful condition.

Nomo back to LA? That's interesting.
I'm still confused on the Hatteberg thing - - what was the point?

No, no, you're confusing Lefebvre's. Jim "LeFever" is the hitting coach in Cincinnati. Joe "LeFave" was the guy San Francisco hired at 1B. Never thought I'd see Joe Lefebvre's name again. =) Not like I'd recalled seeing it before on a non baseball history page, but still...heh. |

Joe broke into the majors with the Yankees and homered in each of his 2 major league games.

Even wore the fabled "you're a rookie" 46 that the Yanks would give to guys like him, Mattingly, Velarde, etc., when they first came up - - until Pettitte kept it.

And the other guy was a second baseman with the Dodgers in the sixties, as opposed to an outfielder with several clubs in the eighties.

Thanks everyone, I now have my Lefebvre's straight. What I am sure of is that Jim's son Ryan is Denny Matthews partner with the Royals & played OF for the U of Minn. in the early 90's.
