Red face Mondesi Money Mess

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1784039

Quote:
Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Raul Mondesi will play without pay until a lawsuit against him is settled.

A Dominican court ruled in February he owed former major leaguer Mario Guerrero about $640,000 for helping Mondesi improve his baseball skills.

Mondesi appealed the ruling but said the court ordered his bank accounts frozen and the Pirates decided to withhold his pay. His contract this year is for $1.15 million.

"I froze when they called me in the office to tell me that I won't be paid for these first two weeks, and possibly not for future weeks until the problem is resolved," Mondesi told The Associated Press by telephone from New York, where his team is playing the Mets.

Pirates VP of communications Patty Paytas said the team is putting Mondesi's wages into an interest-bearing escrow account until the case is resolved.

"Obviously, we are not trying to make our player unhappy, but we believe that we have to comply with the court order," she said.

Mondesi should counter sue for not teaching him how to be selective at the plate.

I've been going to games since August 8, 1973....and on August 22, 2004, finally, a foul ball came my way. I had to reach for it, and it deflected off the tip of my right index finger. Shoot, if I was only 4 inches taller!

What was he doing getting instruction from a career .257 hitter?

And as a fielder, Mario was nothing to write home about either.

Default Mondesi lawsuit

Here's a wacky news item:

http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/trib.../s_193330.html
MONDESI UPDATE
Outfielder Raul Mondesi missed his third game because of a personal issue in the Dominican Republic. The Pirates don't know yet whether Mondesi will rejoin them in time for their road series in Colorado, which begins Tuesday night.
Mondesi's absence is related to the lawsuit filed against him by former major leaguer Mario Guerrero, who contends he is entitled to one percent of Mondesi's earnings because he taught him baseball skills as a child.
Mondesi is concerned about the well being of his wife and three children who are still living in his native country. General manager Dave Littlefield has been kept abreast of the situation through Mondesi's agent, Jeff Moorad

ESPN the Magaizne had an interesting article about the agreements that go on between potential players and local agents in the Dominican Republic. There isn't a ton of oversight that goes on and a lot of players sign away a ton of their money to get a chance.

Rumors are swirling that Mondesi might miss the rest of the season.

Maybe Raul & Canseco can do a Latin version of the Lawrence/Smith "Bad Boys" movies now - - since they both will have so much free time..............

I can't believe it now - Mondy gets to FA himself all over the league and teams like BAL and ANA are interested?

Hey interested teams, there's a reason why this guy has had so many stops in recent years!

A story I read (not the one linked at the top of the thread) mentioned Baltimore, Anaheim, and a team I don't remember but I had the impression it was coming from his agent more than specific teams 'fessing up to having an interest.

Mondesi came into the bigs the year after Mike Scioscia retired.
Betcha if they played together, this signing never happens.

Default Poster child for baseballs ills

And the LOSER is.......Raul Mondesi. I knew when he left the Pirates for "personal reasons" that it was all about the money. If he was unhappy with his contract, why did he sign in the first place ?
Funny how he can concentrate on baseball again, since a team like the Angels offered him a contract. What an overrated jerk. Good riddance.
How do the Buccos keep finding these guys ? "Joggin'" George Hendricks, Derek "Operation Shutdown" (not that he ever really got started) Bell, and now Mondesi. Maybe they will look at players attitudes as much as so-called ability when deciding who to sign.
I feel much better now.

I think Figgins will still be in CF for the most part.
