Default Lieber Hurts Groing

Newsday.com under the scary headline "Yanks Shutdown Lieber" say they Yanks are going to rest Lieber for a while due to a sore groin. Apparently it is the case of an athlete trying to push himself further than his body was ready for.

Despite the scary headline there were no reports of arm problems.

This could cost him his spot in the rotation - if NY has a knee-jerk reaction and trades for another SP.

I've been going to games since August 8, 1973....and on August 22, 2004, finally, a foul ball came my way. I had to reach for it, and it deflected off the tip of my right index finger. Shoot, if I was only 4 inches taller!

The NYDN has mentioned Donovan Osborn as a replacement. The Kris Benson rumors are floating around out there as well. El Duque could be ready by midseason.

I'd say NY should wait for now, considering Lieber's going to be the 5th man.

The last year that Osborne was a good pitcher was when Paul Molitor, Rusty Greer, Kevin Seitzer, Mo Vaughn and Dave Nilsson were in the Top 10 in the AL Batting Race........

even the Yankees must be smart enough to know not to bank on him.

That may be the case, but I don't see anything wrong with having an open tryout for the #5 starter's spot until either Lieber or Hernandez is ready.

Or, am I just placing too little value on a #5?
