Who didn't get drafted that should have?
Personally, I'm shocked no one took Nettles at 3B. Gold Gloves. All-time HR leader in the AL for 3Bs....................top ten all-time runs created.

Wetteland and Ed Walsh also make my list.

Steve, I'm looking at Ed Walsh's stats: 1.82 lifetime ERA, went 40-15 in 1908 w/measly 464.0 IP, a whole 2 HRs, 269 Ks, 1.42 ERA.
![]() ![]() Now if only I'd have known then what I know now...........I wanted to take Donnie Baseball at 1B but my pal CSmooth said he'd never made the HOF. I felt like going my own way anyhow, picking McCovey as a DH just to take him out of the 1B pool. I was wondering if Ryne Sandberg was going to be left out but was later picked. I took "Wee" Willie Keeler over Andre Dawson at OF since I wanted a 19th century star. Lots of pitchers I could've taken. People picked Seaver and Koufax, but Drysdale and Koozman weren't picked. Randy was picked but Schilling wasn't. Long list. |

The stats of 20's and 30's hitting stars were deeply discounted, it seems. I thought Goose Goslin, Kiki Cuyler, and Sam Rice all probably should have made a team in the OF.
Wettleland has great stats; if there was a 14th team, I think he would have been the pick at closer. He lacked a hook, though -- there's nothing distinctive about him. If he had a resume, what would the first line be? Hard to say. Nettles was great...I got the impression that people in this game were scared off by low BA, and BA was Nettles' weak point. He did everything else well. (Well, he was a good baserunner with average speed.) I was surprised Ed Walsh didn't get taken either...he was definitely on my short list, but I filled my pitching spots early. As we discounted hitting stars from the offense-happy 30's, we may have discounted pitching stars from the offense-starved turn of the century. |

If I had to do it all over again, I'd pick OF, IF (especially SS & C), CL and regular pitchers as 12th & 13th picks. So many great choices it was ridiculous. I think I could've placed in the top 50% had I picked Walsh and Palmer. Strategically, this would've allowed me to have concentrated on positions like SS (Ozzie), C (Bench), OF (Yaz), CL (Goose) and allowed me to pick someone like McCovey as my DH, or even Hank Aaron (would've won that DH contest easy). Spilled milk now. |

Frank Baker - when you look at his numbers compared to the rest of the league, he was one of the best offensive players of his time.
Little surprised that guys like Niekro and Perry didn't make any cuts.

Yeah, Niekro, Perry, even Don Sutton for career value is really high, even though he never had that one special season. Also Robin Roberts and Eddie Plank.
There's just a heck of a lot of terrific pitchers available. I thought about Baker at 3b, but the argument for him is so contingent upon context it's hard to make. However, I'd be really happy to have him. |

Don Sutton I missed by failing to do my homework on closers (was only thinking of Goose and Eck, both of whom I missed when they were ready for the picking). I'll still wonder how well Mattingly would've done in the 1B category despite no HOF or jewelry. You can't take away all those GGs so I'll be in coulda woulda shoulda mode for awhile. Oh well. |

As was noted above, I took offensive context into account in a big way. There are a large number of very good offensive players from the 1920-30s era. There are also a large number of guys from that era with excellent surface offensive stats who were not great ballplayers compared to other eras.
When it got down to just two second baseman, it was pretty clear that Biggio and Sandberg were the only two left and that a pretty big dropoff happened after that. I would have waited until the end too, but got spooked about the dreaded DH/EH picks and didn't want to get stuck. I will say that at 2B, I was pretty surprised that Ken Boswell was picked.

How about Darrell Evans? Never a great average, but played for a long time, hit for power, and drew a ton of walks.

Yeah, Evans always gets forgotten. There were probably worse picks at DH and EXH.
