Unhappy Corey Koskie Family's Misfortune

http://www.canoe.ca/NewsStand/Winnip...03/368239.html

Quote:
Koskie's wife, Shannon, a full five months pregnant with their third child when they arrived in Ft. Myers, Fla., suffered a miscarriage.

"Just before we came down to Florida, we had an ultrasound and everything was fine," Koskie said from Ft. Myers yesterday. "And then three days later, there was something not right. We went to the hospital ... and they couldn't find a heartbeat."

The baby was lost, but because Shannon was so far along, doctors had to induce labour. The drugs took a toll on her, but 12 days later, Koskie says his wife has recovered.

Still, the questions remain. Shannon had handled this pregnancy the same as the two that produced healthy boys Bradley and Joshua, now almost four and 1 1/2, respectively.

"You ask questions, like why this kind of stuff happens," Koskie said. "And then you walk into the hospital and there's a woman smoking and she's, like, getting ready to go into labour.

"You can do everything right and miscarry, and you can do everything wrong and have a beautiful, healthy baby. We don't know why this happens, but it happens. It's almost like there's no rhyme or reason."

And it's not the first time the Koskie's have been through it.

Early last September, during a series in Minnesota, Shannon miscarried at 11 weeks.

Koskie put on a brave face, telling manager Ron Gardenhire he wanted to play, but 15 minutes before a game, he broke down.

Bummer of a story. Stuff like this reminds you that players have lives and what goes on outside the lines can have an impact them. I hope the family gets some counseling. Miscarriage issues can be some heavy bags for a family. And, if you've had one or more - you think "Why us?" But, in reality, we have no idea on who miscarries and how often. Sometimes, when it's early, some women (who did not even know they were PG yet) miscarry without even knowing it - - writing it off as just a heavy month.

To the baseall angle, I wonder is this will weight on Koskie for the early part of this season?

I've been going to games since August 8, 1973....and on August 22, 2004, finally, a foul ball came my way. I had to reach for it, and it deflected off the tip of my right index finger. Shoot, if I was only 4 inches taller!

Aw, no. That sort of thing shouldn't happen to anybody.

Best thing the Koskie's could do right now is look into adoption.

you think? i dunno... they already have 2 legit kids, couldn't the adopted one be seen as 'replacing' the lost baby, subsconsciously or not?

A terrible story to read, especially when your wife is 5 months pregnant.

Don't tell her about it.
5 years ago, someone I worked with was PG. About 7 months at the time. Another person here then, also PG, had the sort of the same deal. She was more than 5 months along, the baby died, and she was forced to deliver still born. The one I worked with, when she heard the story, lost it. I had to talk to her for days. She was convinced that it could happen to her........

.........anyway, boy, are we off topic...........

back to baseball and the impact on Koskie, or lack there of!

Hard to say the effect it would have on him since people handle this kind of thing in very different ways. If it's any indication, he had one of his better months last September, despite the first miscarriage happening early that month. Not up to his usual standards, but it was his best month after getting hurt in the middle of the year.

no. i think a lot of people see adopted kids as different - truth is, these people aren't likely to adopt anyways. but i dunno what the koskies' view on this is. which is why i questioned sweav's assertion that the 'best' thing for them is to look into adoption.

as for corey's performance on the field, he's had an up and down career thus far:
Code:
RCAA 1999 9 2000 8 2001 19 2002 9 2003 24
he's going into his age 31 season, so some could argue that 2003 may be about as good as it gets

it depends on how he approaches it. some people let this affect their work, others use it as motivation to do better work (and keep their minds off of their tragedy)
