I've been going to games since August 8, 1973....and on August 22, 2004, finally, a foul ball came my way. I had to reach for it, and it deflected off the tip of my right index finger. Shoot, if I was only 4 inches taller!

Have you read The Baseball Same Game?

I think Lee is more likely on the way down than the way up. He was 27 last year. I think 2003 is as good as it gets.

Never have been all that giddy about him - I think he's going to decline.

Lee has been a decent player with some pop in his bat. At his age he still has several good, but not great, years ahead of him.

I don't know what the fascination is with Lee. Here in Milwaukee I sometimes listen to the Chicago sports talk radio station, and they always talk about how it would be great to trade Magglio Ordonez so they could sign Lee long-term, because he's the future. I always think, "am I missing something here?"

When you look at his walk figures compared to the league average, 2002 stands out even more as a fluke year--

1999: -38
2000: -22
2001: -14
2002: +29
2003: -19

it's coz they'll say 2003 was the year in which he finally became a 30 hr, 100 rbi guy (nevermind the fact that this was a case of him getting more AB, not of him playing better)

I'm not sure I see the fuss about Lee either, but his walk totals probably aren't what the ChiSox care about from him anyway.

That said, he reminds me a lot of Mark Quinn, OF for the Royals a few years back. He was supposed to be "the future" too, but people rapidly became aware that his patience at the plate was terrible, and his fielding was more than embarrassing. Boomer should remember this guy.

Was Carlos ever hurt this year? I saw him throw a few times against the royals, and it was pretty hard to watch; he was consistently getting cut off by somebody on the fringe of the outfield.

Was he hurt, or is that just a weak arm?

If was playing hurt, then who knows what next year will bring, I guess.

I don't think there's any doubt that walks aren't what the Whitesox care about. At least not from their manager, who ranks as the greatest player who ever lived in terms of avoiding them.

But, if they are going to get success from him, he's going to be more successful in that area of his game.

You'll also note that Lee hit .631 OPS against lefties last year. For comparison, Brent Mayne, a left-handed, light-hitting back-up catcher, hit .630 against lefties last year. And for better average.
