Best player: Mel Ott. This was the first MVP award Ott was jobbed out of, though it wouldn't be the last. Chuck Klein won by leading in HR and RBI, while playing in the best hitters' park in the league. But, his team played a surprising .500 (78-76) and finished 4th, while Ott's Giants were a disappointing 6th (tied), but only 6 games worse than the Phils. Ott was the leader in OBP, and in OPS+.
Best pitcher: Carl Hubbell, which makes you wonder how the Giants finished 6th. Kind of like last year's Braves, no depth. Lon Warneke had some more showy stats, but Hubbell pitched better. Best rookie: Dizzy Dean. The Cardinals slid from the pennant to the second division, but came up with a prize pitcher in Ol' Diz. |

Best Hitter: Mel Ott
The Giants were bad that year but Ott was very good. His OPS+ was 10 points better than anyone else in the league. Best Pitcher: Lon Warneke The Arkansas Hummingbird went 22-6 with a 2.37 ERA in his first full season in the rotation. It's a surprise to me that he actually has an arguement for the HOF. He was a career 192-121 with an ERA+ of 119. He lost some time to WWII and never seemed to regain his groove when he got back. |
