I've been going to games since August 8, 1973....and on August 22, 2004, finally, a foul ball came my way. I had to reach for it, and it deflected off the tip of my right index finger. Shoot, if I was only 4 inches taller!

I think there's a concern for many players...even if innocent, if their name is tied to this mess it's bad news.

The weird thing is that it was a FedEx slip, from Sheffield, not to him. What could be sending to Greg Anderson? Maybe money. Then, you have to ask - money for what?

Someone, somewhere made the analogy to the Pittsburgh cocaine trials of the '80s. This is starting to look like that (even though there has been no signal that anyone intends to go after the users).

Sheff will, like all the rest (if and when we find out who all the rest are) will have some explaining to do. It could make for a long summer with the NY media.

Ha. You cannot mention money sent by FedEx around here without eliciting groans (or guffaws) about 1988 and the famous SI edition "Kentucky's Shame."

We now return you to the (possible) scandal du jour.

Don't know whether to worry about Sheff or not. He is not exactly one of the guys you thing of when you think of possible steroids users.

Or maybe he sent him a signed ball and bat as a thank you for helping him work on his conditioning.

FWIW, I saw the media try to interview Sheff on this today, on ESPN News, and he did not look happy - and all he would offer was a 'no comment'

Interesting. Sheffield, while a player I have expected to decline for a few years, is not one I would guess as a steriod user..

I was given to understand that the document in question was a receipt, as in a receipt for a package that Sheff had received from BALCO. Sort of delivery confirmation or something.

sweaver - IIRC, in the court doc, it says it was a slip from a Fedex from Sheff to Anderson.

FWIW, this is starting to get under his skin now, IMHO:

In the last couple of days, Gary Sheffield has been thrust into the national conversation about baseball and steroids. He wants out of it.

So yesterday, as he departed the Yankees' minor-league complex, the club's new rightfielder did away with the no-comments and laid out his cards: He has never taken steroids, and he welcomes the chance to be tested for them.

"I've been an honorable guy," Sheffield said. "I've been outspoken about testing guys. Anybody that wants to say, 'I'll take the challenge of taking the test' ... I'll be the first to stand up there and won't back down."

On Tuesday, the U.S. Attorney's office e-mailed documents to several news organizations that accidentally revealed Sheffield sent a Federal Express package to BALCO, the San Francisco-area company being investigated for providing steroids to athletes. The e-mail was supposed to have all names blacked out, but Sheffield's name escaped the editing process.

Rufus Williams, Sheffield's attorney, said yesterday that he received a call Tuesday from Jeff Novitzky, the IRS special agent who has led the government's investigation. Novitzky apologized for the error, Williams said.

"Gary's name was never supposed to have been in there," Williams said in a telephone interview. "Gary was no more than a witness to all of this. He was part of their fact-finding."

According to the affidavit the package was from Sheff to BALCO.

I doubt that Sheffield is about to be busted ( on steroids or other drugs) because if you look at his career OPS, it is flat, there is no huge jump at age 36 like Bonds. Sheff's 1996 OPS was his highest. His HR total is flat.

"But Sheffield said his only contact with BALCO was when he gave the lab blood and urine samples and then received vitamins that were specially designed for his body type. He said he has always been "a big vitamin guy" and still takes personalized vitamins, even though he is no longer working with Bonds or BALCO."

He's willing to be tested.

"Anybody that wants to say I (should) take the challenge of taking a test, I'll be the first guy up there and won't back down," Sheffield said. "I don't feel like I have to cheat. I've been a talented player for 15years and I don't need anything (manufactured) to play a baseball game.

"I'll be the first to stand in line and lift my head up high and say, 'I'm a legit player.'"
