Question Does Anyone Remember This Story?

A post on the Giambi thread about Jason finding large sums of $$ in the cushions of his couch caused me to remember the story a few years back about an Indians' rookie pitcher who forgot to cash some paychecks and they were just sitting in his locker. It was a story that proved him colorful.

He was a rookie, a late season call-up. Was it Bartolo Colon, or was it one of their rookie pitchers that crashed and burned out?

It was Manny Ramirez.

I heard two stories - -

1. He left a pair of boots in Texas and when he had the clubbie send them to him, the clubbie saw an uncashed paycheck in the boot.

2. He had the Tribe batboy take his car to the carwash, and told the kid there was money in the glove box to cover it - - reportedly, the kid found $20,000 in cash in the glove compartment.

Manny is also the guy, when, allegedly, he saw the O.J. Simpson Bronco chase on TV, he tried to call up Indians teammate Chad Ogea to find out what he'd done.

Not the sharpest tool in the shed.

I thought it was a pitcher, but it may not have been. Now that you and Skip tell me, it probably was Manny.

All rookies look alike, anyway....

Who was the black player who'd been invited in 1997 to the 50th Anniversary of Jackie Robinson's entry into MLB, but then said he wasn't familiar with Jackie? Was it Bobby Bonilla?

Speaking as a teacher, you'd just as soon have a classroom full of these types, even if they make you want to bounce your head off a wall occasionally. Much more fulfilling than those that have ability, but won't do any work.

I figure coaches feel much the same.

It was Vince Coleman.

I guess that's him since I didn't remember the name. I can't expect everyone to know their history, but playing professionally and not knowing even that little is beyond comprehension. This is like a Hispanic player not knowing who Roberto Clemente or Luis Tiant were. Incredibly unacceptable to me.
