Default A couple of more NY moves

The Yankees have traded P Jay Witasick to the Giants for OF John Vander Wal.

The Mets have a 2:30 press conference to announce the signing of free agent P David Weathers.

Why would the Giants do this? Why? Vander Wal was disappointing, sure, but for Witasick???

Why? He's a journeyman's journeyman who had maybe a good four months here and there.

Gang, you can find middle relievers all over the place as six-year free agents and non-roster invitees. Man, some GMs are NUTS!

Why, Weathers is a PV! Didn't you know?

Vander Wal is also about 37, and has no defensive value, except maybe at first. He would be a good LH DH. Witasick, with a live arm, sounds about right.

Live arm my kiester.

There are a lot of AAA relievers with live arms. They go up, they flash, they burn, they play in Charlotte and Indianapolis for a while. Witasick is the same creature. Vander Wal can hit, some. It's asinine. It's trading a hard to find commodity for one you can buy at the corner drug store.

Close, Proven Veteran. Someone with a track record, no matter how poor, in the majors.

I just went to the corner drug store (which is actually the second building from the corner, the corner store is a tobacco shop) and they were all out of Vander Wals. Still had a Witasick on the shelf, though. Control looked a little off.

As sweaver pointed out, PV is "Proven Veteran". Sort of like Ron Coomer, or Gerald Williams, or dare I say Todd Ziele.

Almost the same silliness as "professional hitter".

After I questioned it, I actually saw that label used in my local paper - - sort of - - - - they described him as a "veteran presence" who could pitch the 7th innning. Silly.
